**Considering Your Options for Your Car**
As I evaluate my car situation, I find myself weighing the potential outcomes of various choices. I currently have approximately $7,000 remaining to pay off on my financed vehicle. While it has served me well overall, I have encountered a few recalls, a drained battery that required replacement last year, and some minor cosmetic body issues. Despite these isolated occurrences, the car has proven to be a reliable mode of transportation.

While there may be merit in keeping the car until it ceases to function and the need for monthly payments is eliminated, I am also considering the option of trading it in for a newer model. In addition, I am contemplating whether it would be wise to extend the warranty to cover up to 100,000 miles. These decision points have left me feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about the best course of action to take.

I would not trade it in. They will generally try to roll your owed amount into the new loan and then you end up being underwater forever. A 2016 fusion should be reliable if you have done all routine maintenance. The financially sound move would be pay it off and save up cash for your next car

  • Apprehensive-Ad-80

IÔÇÖd drive it till the wheels fall off. Personally IÔÇÖve always really liked the fusions, I think theyÔÇÖre good looking cars and have a good balance of size, performance, and price. If youÔÇÖve kept up on the maintenance (oil changes are the big one), and donÔÇÖt beat on it, thereÔÇÖs no reason to think would have any problems getting 150,000-175,000 miles on it with minimal headache

  • Kudzupatch

While you could have a major repair the odds are against it. It is almost always cheaper to drive what you have. Repairs will only extremely rarely be more than the increase in payment and insurance on a newer one.

You will have some repairs along the way. But that car should go 200K miles easy.

  • temsjems

A 2016 is still pretty new and shouldnÔÇÖt have any major catastrophic failures. Neither would a new trade in. So, do you want to owe $7,000 on a largely reliable vehicle and pay for maintenance, or spend five figures on a new vehicle and still be on the hook for regular maintenance? Also, what would an extended warranty cover, and is that coverage you might already have through your insurance? No need to be redundant.

I would pay it off, and then continue to put that amount in savings toward repairs or your next vehicle.

Thank you all!!! That was my gut, but IÔÇÖm clueless about cars and wasnÔÇÖt trusting the advice I received.

  • XeroCrash

I have a 2011 fusion. Past 170k. The worst thing I’ve had to change is 2 front bushings . Cost me about 300. Keep up on the oil changes and do any transmission fluid changes at the dealership.

  • Capable-Baseball-PHL

    Thank you!

Since you mentioned that you want to make the financially responsible decision, I would say drive it until the maintenance becomes more costly than a car payment on something newer.

Of course, thatÔÇÖs just thinking in terms of money. IMO, cars should be thought of as tools. You want to have tools that are reliable and last a long time, so itÔÇÖs probably not a good idea to go too cheap on them, but you should only go as fancy and flashy as you can afford (or need). Cars are a lifestyle investment, they are not really ever a good financial investment (although, if you want to be nit picky, owning a car, any car, is a good financial investment unless you live in an urban center and you never need to go outside of urban centers, for the basic reason that it means you can get around.) For the average person, the value of a car will always plummet, quickly.

If your circumstances change, and you need something more comfortable, bigger, or that has more power, then think about getting a different car. There are so many variables, like how long or far you need to drive every day, how many kids you have, stuff like that, which I think has just as much to do with decisions about what car to own as money does. Unless youÔÇÖre the type of person that gets a lot of joy from owning the nicest car you can get, IÔÇÖd keep it. If I were you, try not to think of your car as a ÔÇ£Ford FusionÔÇØ but rather a ÔÇ£reliable sedanÔÇØ. If you move to the country, and want a pick up, donÔÇÖt think about getting a nice F-150, think about getting a ÔÇ£truck that gets a decent balance of fuel efficiency compared to its size and power,ÔÇØ then find whatever the best deal is for what youÔÇÖre getting. Try not to fall into blind brand loyalty, or get too enamored by whatÔÇÖs sexy. At the end of the day, the only person who really cares what you drive around is you.

As for the warranty, thatÔÇÖs up to you. Ford fusions arenÔÇÖt super expensive cars, and it might be better to just shop around and see what sort of insurance would be on the table for you. I think itÔÇÖs pretty unusual to get warranties extended beyond 80,000 miles for the average car owner.

  • theoddlittleduck

I drive a 2011, and the only expensive repair IÔÇÖve had is front struts/coil springs (cost $1000 Canadian, $800 was parts). I think your good for another 5 years. Set aside $1-2k for emergency repairs just in case as at some point you will need a repair or two.

  • Bonsacked

I don’t ever buy an extended warranty. You would be better off putting that money in a savings account and use it to fix your car when problems occur. The mark up on extended warranties are very high. So unless you are certain that you are getting a good deal, I would not waste the money on one.

  • burningdownmylife

Never trade in unless it’s a piece of shit you can’t sell yourself.

Never buy extended warranty. Buy a dependable car and take care of it, which you have.

  • AssaultOfTruth

Keep it and no on the warranty for anything more than maybe $400.

  • Woodit

Ext warranty would not be worth it, it wouldnÔÇÖt address the issues youÔÇÖve mentioned already experiencing. Just keep the car, pay it off (pay more every month than your payment), it should be reliable for a long time.

  • normalman714

If youÔÇÖre still not decided or contemplating no trade In and no warranty. Ever (on the warranty)
