Title: Falling Victim to a Job Scam: Seeking Assistance from AI Legalese Decoder
Introduction:
Recently, I made the unfortunate mistake of falling for a job scam perpetrated by individuals claiming to represent “Luminis Health.” This enticing job offer involved a data entry position promising an impressive hourly wage of $30-$35. In hindsight, I realize my vulnerability as a recent graduate desperately seeking employment. My predicament took a turn for the worse when I received a digital check amounting to $1,400 to purchase supplies from a vendor named “tia lovel.” Assuming the check had cleared, I proceeded to order the supplies. However, my optimism quickly turned to disappointment when I discovered that the deposited check had bounced, and the money I paid to the vendor had seemingly vanished. In light of these circumstances, I am eager to explore any potential avenues to recoup my lost funds. Moreover, I am currently awaiting a receipt for the purchased items, which has yet to arrive.
1. The Deceptive Job Offer and Initial Transaction:
The job offer I received from individuals purporting to represent “Luminis Health” appeared to be a dream come true. This demonstrates how vulnerable individuals, particularly recent graduates, can be manipulated by fraudulent schemes.
To proceed with my employment, the scammers sent me a digital check worth $1,400 to facilitate the purchase of necessary supplies from a vendor named “tia lovel.” Believing that the check had been successfully processed, I confidently proceeded to order the supplies required for my supposed job. Regrettably, this action would soon reveal the extent of the deception.
2. The Bounced Check and Missing Funds:
Shortly after placing the order, I received a disheartening message informing me that the digital check I had deposited had been returned, and the money paid to the vendor was seemingly swallowed by the void. You were scammed. This is a relatively common fake check/fake job scam.
You need to contact your bank immediately. You can also file a report here: https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/ and here: https://www.ic3.gov/
You’ve been scammed. Classic, common fake check scam. Cut off all communication with the scammers and be prepared to pay back the bank. The vendor is fake, the job is fake, the check is fake, everything is fake, except the money you now owe. I’m sorry.
https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/assistant
>Is there anything I can do to get a return on the money I spent?
No. This was a phony check scam and your money is gone.
>I also still haven’t received a receipt for the items that I bought from the vendor.
There is no “vendor”. That’s the scam. They sent you a bogus check. You then turned around and sent real money back to the scammer, who was pretending to be the vendor.
Your money is gone. You could report this to the police, but it is likely that the scammers are not in your police department’s jurisdiction, or even in the same country.
And donÔÇÖt listen to any messages from people offering to ÔÇ£recoverÔÇØ the money. They are also scammers. ThereÔÇÖs a near zero chance of recovery, and thatÔÇÖs if the scammer messed up somewhere in their process.
You should also head over to r/scams to learn more about other scams so you don’t get caught out in the future. 30 dollars an hour for data entry is insane
To expand on the people saying itÔÇÖs a scam- the people running the scam are in a different country. Lawsuits wonÔÇÖt be able to reach them, let alone trying to find them in the first place.
r/scams
Please join r/Scams as youÔÇÖre vulnerable to job scams
There is no one to sue – these criminals are going to be overseas though you can and should talk to your bank fraud department. I see the reporting links have been shared
The job was fake, the vendor was fake and the check was fake.
Your money was real, and the scammers are long gone. Now you are left to deal with some serious consequences
YouÔÇÖve passed a bad check and will be in some trouble with the bank. YouÔÇÖre going to have to do some pleading and paying back.
Absolutely no one can help you get your money back. Anyone who dmÔÇÖs you they can recover or hack is a scammer. NO exceptions.
This is an expensive life lesson about not trusting, and doing due diligence. DonÔÇÖt take checks from people you donÔÇÖt know, and no one will pay $30 an hour for data entry. See the Scams subreddit to learn the other red flags you missed and to learn so this never happens again. Best.

Contact your bank. They have seen this scam before and may be able to help.

I work in a credit union. Just because you get immediate credit does not guarantee a check is good. That check still has to be transmitted through fed and paid by the other institution, and until that happens you’re basically being loaned those funds. See if your institution will give you a loan to pay off what you owe, that loan at least may help your credit. Unfortunately that money is long gone now.
You MIGHT be able to file a dispute with the bank, depending on circumstances, but that’s up to them at this point
As someone else said, if anyone contacts you saying they can get your money back, they are scammers
They might be able to give advice, like here, but that’s it. Give them no info about you, and do not give them any money
The questions that the bank will have will revolve around that website you did the transaction on, so be ready to explain that in great detail

IÔÇÖm sorry but a digital check?
As others have said come over to r/scams. Also nobody can hack the money back. Those are scammers too.
