Collection agencies are regulated by the government. Here’s the information for Ontario about what collection agencies are not allowed to do, and how to make complaints about that: https://www.ontario.ca/page/stop-collection-agency-calls

    > My boyfriend said heÔÇÖs paid multiple times (after already paying it off) just to try to get them to stop calling. They wonÔÇÖt.

So this is clearly not an actual legal debt collector. Collecting the same debt multiple times would be really illegal. So this is a scam. Unfortunately your BF has probably done something dumb and then tried to pay these people… and now they know he will keep paying so they keep coming.

This is going to be a police matter and that will require your BF being completely open and honest about what happened.

  • Blockstack1

Yeah those aren’t real debt collectors. He messed up really badly paying them and now they will harass you and anyone he knows for a long time.

  • JustanOldphart

Could be scammers who have access to his devices so they have all his contacts. Have him get all his devices cleaned then change all passwords. Buy the receptionist a loud whistle.

  • Mariss716

Paying a scammer / ÔÇ£companyÔÇØ not following regulations is the worst thing he could do. Now heÔÇÖs a mark and they wonÔÇÖt stop. Rather than getting them off his back, heÔÇÖs a cash cow. Likely a scam. Block and inform your work to screen and not engage them.

Is your regulated profession federal by chance?

I’ve heard federally regulated work places are cracking down on harassment in the work place setting using the Canada Labour Code – regardless of ‘why’ the harassment is occurring.

Might require a manager or higher sending an ‘official letter’ reminding them of the regulations and their obligations and consequences. Of course assuming you can get a hold of them.

You could read the regulations for your workplace and speak to someone in HR.

This sucks and hopefully it’s resolved soon.

  • cablemonkey604

Maybe you could pretend you’re going to pay, find out who they are, and make a complaint to the provincial regulator?

  • Direnji

You did all you can, because this sounded like a rouge collections agent or might be some kind of scam. I would worry how they find out about you and your work place phone number.

If you know the actually collections agency, you should make a police report, because this is criminal harassment from the agency, not the agent.

Other than that, talk to your place and show them the police report just says you are been harassed, and if they block the number, that would be the best.

It sounds like your boyfriend may not be telling the entire story here. What these people are doing is criminal. No legitimate debt collection agency would ever engage in harassment that extreme. Either he still owes the money, or he got involved with some very shady people. What you’re experiencing is definitely not the norm. You could easily lose your job over this as I’m sure your employer is more than fed up with the harassment. Have a heart to heart with your boyfriend and then consult a lawyer.

  • inmatenumberseven

Say youÔÇÖll pay, but only in person. Then find out who they are and sue them.

  • dirkdiggler403

Did he borrow from a loan shark? Probably got bigger problems

  • DrownmeinIslay

This happened to a coworker of mine. It was his student debt that he had stopped paying when he started bartending under the table. Years later when he was finally on the books again at my company someone claiming they had bought the debt would call the office CONSTANTLY demanding to talk to him. Same treatment, obscenities and threats to receptionists. Real classy business model. Eventually they fucked off but maybe it’s cause he never gave them a dime.
