    They were so disorganised that they probably put you on their payroll. It’s good that you now have a p45, they have removed you from said payroll.

    Set up a personal tax account with hmrc. You will be able to login and view employment history. Make sure everything is in order.

    Inform HR at your current employer so that they won’t get an unpleasant surprise thinking that you have another job. As they haven’t technically paid you anything it shouldn’t really matter.

    Edit: shouldn’t really matter for tax purposes that is. In regard to the £600 from last year that should also be fine because there is a small allowance for payment for odd jobs, that can enter your accounts without HMRC throwing a hissy.

    Crucially, talk to your current employer and give them all the context before HMRC give them half the story.

    I’d just keep an eye on the tax code for your real job. As long as that doesn’t change, you can ignore the P45. It’s just possible that because HMRC think you had two jobs for a while, they’ll get confused and split your personal allowance in an unhelpful way.

    It should probably be fine in this case, though. It can be more of a problem when two jobs overlap and then you leave the original job, so your newer “second” job becomes your only job.

    It sounds like you were, briefly, employed last year. If you (supposedly) did some work and were paid for it, then you were an employee. (Unpaid working “trial shifts” are often illegal – see e.g. [this]( As such, the £600 you earned last tax year should have been treated as income in that year, and taxed accordingly. Did you receive a payslip? Or a P60 in April this year?

    For this tax year, simply being listed as an “employee” doesn’t matter if you have worked zero hours and earned zero income.

    I would recommend using the HMRC self assessment online webchat, ask to speak to an agent, and explain the situation. They are normally decent, so should be able to sort you out.

    HMRC will send you letters if they need anything from you so I wouldn’t expect this to cause any issues in the mean time. Perhaps tell your current workplace what’s going on too so they don’t get any surprises (probably just a tax code change, but there is a thing that says if you have another job when they run payroll).

    With PAYE, your tax will work itself out automatically. But if you never earned then it should stay the same, but keep an eye on it though in case your take home changes.

    If everything is as you say and I understand correctly, you can ignore it.

    It sounds like you were technically employed by them despite your best efforts, though earned nothing by PAYE. In any case as a second job it was likely taxed at basic rate and won’t have affected your code for your main job (1257L?). Even if it did, in the end HMRC would return anything you overpaid if you lost any allowance from your main job.

    The £600 sounds like it was a fee paid prior to your employment, and if so would be self employed income. Assuming you had no other self employed income that year (?), that is well within what you can earn in a year without being required to register for self assessment.

    Forget about it.

    No issue, just ignore it if the P45 says zero, if they put you on payroll they have to issue the form, it’s useful for you if you need proof they didn’t pay you. There won’t be any issue from HMRC and there isn’t any issue with your current employer.
