## Desperate Search for Rental Amid Tough Market Conditions

I am currently in the midst of a desperate search for a rental property as I am in the process of moving to a new location. The current market conditions have made finding a suitable rental quite challenging. Amid this stressful situation, I received a message from someone offering what seemed like a viable rental option on Airbnb. They claimed to be willing to rent it on a month-to-month basis, which appeared to be exactly what I was looking for.

## Falling Victim to a Rental Scam and Losing Money

Initially, I was skeptical about the legitimacy of the offer, but the person seemed to have a significant amount of knowledge about the area and other renters whom I had previously contacted. This familiarity with details that only the owner would know helped alleviate some of my concerns. However, things took a turn for the worse when the individual requested a two-week down payment via bitcoinwell.

Reluctantly, I proceeded with the payment, only to find myself ensnared in a trap. Subsequent emails demanded additional sums of money, citing the necessity of a password for the booking to be finalized. Despite my reservations, I found myself sending more money in an attempt to secure the rental. The individual’s insistence on the password for the transaction to go through, combined with the appearance of security measures on the bitcoinwell platform, further misled and confused me.

beware of recovery scammer, your money is gone and anyone claiming they can recover are scammer themself.

Guy hiding behind a digital dumpster in Facebook Messenger… hey kid, heard u want apartment… i have… apartments… but I needs coin.

  • Ok_Bobcat493

Just always assume that everything is a scam in some way. 95% of the time you’re correct

  • Rand_University81

You are an idiot for falling for it. But thatÔÇÖs okay, IÔÇÖve done a million idiotic things I regret.

Just use this as a learning experience and donÔÇÖt do it again.

  • yttropolis

Let me repeat this one more time for everyone else.

**There are no legitimate transactions that want crypto.**

If someone wants you to pay through crypto or if someone wants to pay you through crypto, it’s either illegal or a scam.

  • Deep_Principle_4446

DonÔÇÖt feel too bad, my friends sister who I consider very smart who is University educated with multiple degrees fell for a similar bitcoin scan and lost her entire inheritance from her late father

  • PeePeeePooPoooh

Hey OP, sorry you had to experience this and ignore the mean posts on here, critical thinking often times flies out the window when we are desperate, especially in search for a roof over our head in this market.

Yes you should absolutely report this to the police, a lot of Canadian law enforcement are getting trained in blockchain tracing and are able to recover some funds if they have been moved to an exchange that cooperates with Canadian Judicial orders. It’s definitely not a guarantee and the amount of time that has passed between the reporting to police and the scam itself can also play a huge factor.

Either way, you won’t know unless you report it. Don’t get your hopes up about getting the money back, take it as a lesson to never trust anyone asking you for money before meeting them in person and verifying their identify etc.

  • Tangerine2016

Yes, they pray on desperate people.. You were desperate to get a place. A lot of people are.

This might make you feel better… I like to think I would never fall for something like this but it happens to so many people:

Keep your head up, itll be ok

  • KhyronBackstabber

    Money’s gone.

Get over it. Learn from it.

  • brare91

eh 1500 bucks isnt life changing consider yourself lucky. some people lose hundreds of thousands.

  • for_real_though_what

Hey OP, I know you probably feel terrible. Don’t let other people make you feel worse. Most people are incredibly ignorant when it comes to judging other people’s situations. They’re like those people that say, oh yeah, I would never lose at a fight or panic at a kitchen fire.

I think, OP, you’ll have to find some peace in yourself and try look forward. Assume the money is lost. How does this impact your budget? What kind of places can you rent with what you have left? Figure out the concrete next steps. By all means, report it but don’t put any more emotional energy in the scam. Follow other people’s advice about not getting scammed further (recovery services, etc).┬á

This hurts but it gets fainter over time and there will be more opportunities to make more money in the future.

And if it makes you feel less alone, you can read some stories about other people who have experienced similar scams:

Your money is gone forever. Consider this a life lesson and move on.

  • BlessTheBottle

    Why are people this gullible?

  • carleese24

LMAO……2024, people still chasing this crap. This money would have been better spent getting a rental agent to do the search for you.

**OP…when was the last time you gave even a toonie to the homeless, who’s literally begging you in traffic face to face???? Yet, you sent money to a virtual stranger online.**

Scammer do their homework, and yes they make things sound legit.

  • nullhotrox

This is hilarious. How do people fall for this shit?

  • Parttimelooker

That sucks….and it’s unfortunate that people are so desperate for housing.

  • maulrus

Yeah, you fucked up. You’re going to feel stupid and you probably won’t forget that it happened. Ever. I still feel dumb and angry for falling for the taxi driver “machine not working” scam over a decade ago and that was only $25.┬á

You have to reconcile that the money is gone. At the scale of rent, you can try to reassure yourself that you could have lost a lot more. You can also learn from this experience, now knowing what to look for in a scam, and you can use this as a cautionary tale to warn other people.

You can try making a police report but know going in that there is an almost zero chance they will get your money back.

  • TempAccountNumba1

  • lots-of-shawarma

so clearly a scam.. expensive life lesson. You should have known as you’ve admitted.

    Your money’s gone. Sorry.

Tell your friends so they don’t do the same shit.

  • Modavated

How did you fall for such a blatant scam though

  • machiavel0218

Indeed, the terms “bitcoin” and “idiot” seem to go rather well together.

  • FurryLittleCreature

You have to just accept that you’re not as smart as you think you are. But look on the bright side: if you can accept that, then you’re not as dumb as you could be!
