# Moving to Japan and Taxable Crypto Events
Hello,
I recently relocated to Japan in 2022 and have been holding onto crypto assets since before my move. After doing some research, I have a good grasp of how crypto taxation works in Japan. In 2022, I simply held onto my investments, but in 2023, I engaged in some taxable event trades that have raised questions for me.
## Question 1: Default Method and ACB
I came across information stating that the National Tax Agency (NTA) has established the total average cost method as the default option for calculating crypto gains. There was a deadline to inform the NTA if you wanted to continue using the adjusted cost basis (ACB) method, but I am not sure if this applies to me since I arrived in Japan in 2022. Can I still opt for the ACB method, or is the total average cost method now mandatory for me?
## Question 2: Currency Trading and Tax Methods
Some of my trades involved converting USD to crypto, and my understanding is that currency trading falls under the same category as crypto in terms of taxation (miscellaneous income). Would there be any distinction in selecting a calculation method for these transactions, or would the same method be applied regardless?
I would greatly appreciate any guidance on these matters. Thank you!
## Question 3: Software Solution for TCB Method
Lastly, if I am required to use the total average cost method, could you recommend any software that supports this calculation? I currently use Koinly, but it does not offer support for this method. It would be helpful to have a tool that can assist in converting the calculations if necessary.
Your assistance in these matters would be highly valued. Thank you for your time.
