Tech Companies in Bay Area Announce More Job Cuts

SAN JOSE ÔÇö Tech companies have recently disclosed further plans to lay off hundreds of employees in the Bay Area. The affected sectors include semiconductors and circuit boards.

Intel, SPT Microelectronics, and Tempo Automation are among the companies that have filed layoff notices with the state Employment Development Department, according to public documents.

According to multiple WARN notices on file with the EDD, a total of 351 jobs are expected to be eliminated in the Bay Area.

Details of the Job Cuts:

Intel:

• – The chipmaking titan is cutting 226 jobs in Santa Clara and San Jose. The layoffs are set to be effective on or around Aug. 31 of this year. Intel has described these job cuts as permanent.

SPT Microtechnologies USA:

• – The company plans to ax 67 jobs in San Jose at a site on Hellyer Avenue. These layoffs are also permanent, as stated by the semiconductor equipment manufacturer. The effective date is Nov. 20, 2023.

Tempo Automation:

• – Tempo Automation has laid off 58 employees in San Francisco, which is linked to the permanent closure of its San Francisco location. The company specializes in circuit boards. The closure and layoffs occurred on July 14.

Although this news is undoubtedly painful for affected employees, it is worth noting that it follows a trend of a gradual decline in the rate of layoffs in the Bay Area’s tech industry.

Based on WARN notices filed with the state EDD, tech companies have disclosed plans to eliminate slightly over 27,000 jobs in the Bay Area during 2022 and the first eight-plus months of 2023.

In this year alone, tech companies have announced intentions to lay off nearly 16,600 employees in the Bay Area, which surpasses the approximately 10,500 job cuts made by the sector in 2022.

However, it is important to highlight that approximately 10,200 layoffs occurred in the first quarter of 2023, whereas only 5,200 layoffs occurred in the second quarter of the same year (April to June).

As we approach the end of the third quarter (July-September), tech companies have revealed plans to eliminate just 1,200 Bay Area jobs.
