    Continue.

This wonÔÇÖt be the only fine.

You should contact the DMV to find out the process for getting this out of your husband’s name. Never trust the buyer to do this on their own. Also, they are probably lying and just had no intention of ever putting it in their name. Do not sit on this, if the van is still in his name and causes an accident he could be sued for damages or even wrongful death.

I’d like to add that we definitely have learned the hard way to get the plates when you sell.

  • kf4zht

I don’t know in NM but some states now have a way to remove a registration from your name online. If they do its a good idea to give the buyer a day or two and do it yourself.

2 times I’ve had to do it manually. One was a bike I sold to an out of state buyer, guess whatever state they took it to didn’t communicate back. Second was a boat and trailer I sold to a local guy. He was trying to flip it without registering. When I saw his ads I canceled the trailer and boat registration.

Also anything I trade in will get canceled immediately. Car dealers can be really bad with getting paperwork done.

So dig around and see if you can cancel the registration. Respond to the ticket that you no longer own the car and who it was sold to and proof. You may be responsible for that one ticket if state law says you are responsible for removing registration on the vehicle

Don’t bother with the buyers tale of it getting stolen. Just point them to the next link in the chain and let the govt deal with it. The buyer should have a police report or something, but that is their problem

    > Under the New Mexico plate-to-owner protocol, the license plate of your car is connected to you, not the vehicle. Therefore, before you sell the car and transfer the ownership, you’re responsible for removing the plate yourself.

    Did you?

  • monkeywelder

So you sold it and left the plates on? That seems to be the only way youd get a ticket. A generic van with out plates would give nothing to the camera.

So first DMV – stolen plates.

  • Ok-Opportunity-574

Don’t pay the fine. This isn’t an uncommon situation unfortunately and the people driving that vehicle know the plates aren’t connected to them. Get it straightened out now while it’s just a speeding violation. Every state has a process you can take.

I had to do that myself when family members didn’t realize the license plate had been taken off but was sitting in the back seat and the vehicle was sold. I found out because a few months later I’m going down a street and see my old 4Runner with my license plate on it. I was able to just report it to the DMV as a lost plate.

  • eheyburn

This should be a lesson to everyone to make sure they keep the license plates and surrender them to the DMV.

  • TimeShareOnMars

I got burned by a parking ticked on a vehicle I sold. The buyer told me he would register ss soon as he got the clutch fixed. He fixed and flipped it immediately. Had my old plates and brand new tabs (the clutch went out in the parking lot after putting the new tabs on it…)

I nearly got my license suspended for a 150 ticket on a vehicle I had not owned for nearly a year).

You need to report the vehicle as sold right away to the DOL or you are liable for any tickets received wirh the vehicle.

  • Tim_the_geek

Should not the bill of sale for the sale be sufficient to have the ticket removed?

  • Rocketgirl8097

If this was Washington, you are supposed to report sale of the vehicle to the DMV within like 5 days of the sale. That way, even if the new owner isn’t responsible, it isn’t on you either, and they can’t come after you for crimes that might be committed with it, etc. Is there a similar policy in NM that you weren’t aware of and can maybe still do it after the fact?

  • warrior_poet95834

When you sold the van there was a piece of the title that was supposed to have been sent back to the department of motor vehicles that disclaimed ownership, the worst thing that’s going to happen is that someone is not going to be able to register this vehicle in the future if indeed it was or was not stolen.

  • rokar83

Do you have a bill of sale?

  • CryptoVictim

You have the bill of sale, signed by both parties, right?

  • robertva1

This is what happens when you don’t remove the license plates and report the vehicle sold to the DMV. I’m assuming this is in the USA

  • Bob_12_Pack

In NC we have to turn in the plates to the DMV before dropping the insurance, if you do it backwards you get a fine. It kinda helps us remember to grab the plates.
