Khalife Denies Escape Charge from HMP Wandsworth
Terror suspect Daniel Khalife has denied escaping from Wandsworth prison. The 21-year-old former soldier allegedly broke out of the Category B jail on the morning of Wednesday 6 September. It is reported that he used bedsheets to strap himself under a food truck while wearing a cook’s uniform to make his getaway.
The manhunt lasted for 75 hours before Khalife was arrested on Saturday 9 September. Currently remanded in custody at Category A Belmarsh prison, Khalife appeared at the Old Bailey via videolink wearing a brightly colored sweater. He confirmed his name and date of birth before pleading not guilty to the charge of escape.
The charge specifies that on 6 September, Khalife escaped from HMP Wandsworth while being remanded in custody pending trial. At the time of the alleged offence, he was awaiting trial for leaving fake bombs at a military base (a charge under the Terrorism Act) and committing an act prejudicial to the safety or interests of the state (a charge under the Official Secrets Act).
Khalife, who served as a member of the Royal Signals based at Beacon Barracks in Stafford, was discharged from the army in May. During his court appearance, Khalife spoke to confirm his awareness of the court proceedings.
