Introduction

In the realm of consumerism, we are often faced with the dilemma of choosing between inexpensive, disposable goods and pricier, long-lasting alternatives. While the former may seem tempting due to their initial affordability, the latter often proves to be a wise investment in the long run. A solid set of pots and pans and a great electric toothbrush.

  • PorgCT

A quality mattress. You spend a third of your life on one; donÔÇÖt go cheap.

I got tired of buying purses that needed replacing often. Bought a popular name brand on clearance (still hurt) and here we are years later. I did have to send to their shop once fir zipper repair but it was my fault it needed it.

  • NoodleSalesman

Really anything that you could consider “high use” in your daily routine. This is a common principle with purchasing tools like a drill or saw. If you need to buy one, get a cheap one first. If you break it, that means you use it often enough to warrant getting an expensive one.

  • virtualjunkyard

    A good set of tools!

  • elynbeth

Cookware and knives. I invested in them while I was still in grad school. It took some saving up, but I’ve had them for 15 year and there is no sign of them giving up.

  • cBEiN

Good quality cordless vacuum. IÔÇÖm lazy so I sweep less if I have a cord. I went through several cheaper vacuums. Finally, I got a high quality vacuum. I would have saved money if I just didnÔÇÖt cheap out to start with.

  • Beezneez86

    Solar Panels.

Put them on my house 7-8 years ago and they paid for themselves after the first 3-4. They are literally making me money right now.

    A proper canvas bbq cover.

I went through 2 cheap plastic ones at ~$15 each before I shelled out the ~$80 for a canvas one. The cheap ones only last about a year but I’ve had the canvas one for 5+ years now.

    Power tools

Cheap power tools are just rubbish. If you only do up a few screws a couple of times a year then it’s a bit different, but if you think you’ll be doing anything a bit more heavy duty a quality power tool makes a world of difference. You don’t see any tradespeople with cheap tools.

  • Bluester83283

Invest in a good knife set. Not only are excellent knives are a pleasure to use, cheap knives are just dangerous.

  • AllThotsAllowed

Gonna sound dumb but a half-decent roomba. My gf insisted on a vacuum but she never uses it, and I knew IÔÇÖd never use it, but our apartment floors are nice and clean

  • Frankie_Says_Reddit

    Costco/Kirkland

  • Blottoboxer

A modern machined or MIM double edged safety razor. Entry level stainless or brass ones like Rockwell or Karve will set you back $100, and fancy CNC ones go for up to $300ish.

Once you learn how to use it properly, your skin will thank you. No more ingrown hairs, no more razor rash under collared shirts.

I have some brass and silver specimens from 1904-1934 that are still good as new. The new stainless ones will last pretty much forever.

  • scificionado

Windows. Spring for double- or triple-paned windows.

  • PresenceTop5082

I good blender. I broke two cheap oster blenders within a few months, one the motor burnt out and the other one of the blades broke off while making a smoothie.

  • rottentomati

A nice shower caddy. Used to get cheap ones and they would rust in a year. Spent the $$ for a nice OXO brand caddy and itÔÇÖs great. Easy to clean, doesnÔÇÖt rust, love it.

  • hennytime

Shoes, tires, mattresses and basically anything that keeps you off the ground.

Electric toothbrush is worth its weight in gold.

Nice high end straight razor and stainless steel feather blades from Japan. Best shave ever.

  • Brock_Lobstweiler

Baking stones instead of cookie sheets. I got the pampered chef ones because my cousin sells PC, but if you can find them elsewhere I’m sure they’re good.

They’re kind of like cast iron skillets, in that they need to develop a bit of a patina but after that are completely non stick and don’t need soap to clean them unless something really greasy is left over. Don’t need parchment paper for most things! They cook super evenly and hot spots in the oven are less of an issue.

The only thing I don’t like is that when baking, you have to adjust the timing of the first batch. Because the stone is cold, first batch takes a bit longer. Subsequent batches can take 2-3 minutes less.

Also, not supposed to use them under the broiler. And they’re heavy AF.

  • MFingRocketScience

A good quality pair of men’s boots. Wolverine’s or Red Wing’s. I wear my Red Wing Iron Rangers daily and they still fit like a glove. They just take a quick wash every now and then and look good as new.

  • Evaunits01

    For myself:

    * Victorinox Fibrox Pro Chef’s Knife, 8-Inch Chef’s

Gotta chop stuff for dinner and this thing stays sharp for the longest time. If it gets dull, take the bottom of a ceramic cup and hone is a couple of times and its good as new.

    * Honda’s

My last one was a 2007 Honda Fit that i bought brand new for 17k in 2006. I sold in 2019 with 230k miles on it. Nothing more than normal wear and tear items. Current car is a Honda Accord

    * Herman Miller Aeon Office Chair

Got it off craigslist for 300 bucks. Best damn 300 bucks Ive ever spent on a chair. Can sit in that thing all day.

Solar system for providing most of your home electricity. In my country, where electricity is both intermittent in access as well as expenensive, the initial invest is substantial, but will pay off over time as well as having electricity when it might not be available from the government provider
