Reach out to AER see if you can get a lower interest (possibly 0) loan and pay off your stuff then pay off your debt on the loan.

    Budgeting advice to start Now!
One big thing that helped me is to make a REALISTIC budget. You donÔÇÖt make up numbers that you think you ÔÇ£shouldÔÇØ spend.
You PRINT OUT the numbers that you already DO spend. You print out (or write down) in categories EVERY outgoing expense from your bank account and credit cards for the last 3 months.
You refrain from making excuses like- oh thatÔÇÖs because my car broke, or I had to buy a gift, etc.
    Just categorize it!
Then you (if youÔÇÖre married, you both do this together at your regular family finance meeting) feel sad at looking at your real actual spending for a few minutes. Then you say, itÔÇÖs going to get better because IÔÇÖm going to fix it!
You pick ONE category to reduce spending by an amount that you are very confident you can achieve and do not worry about reducing the other categories.
You check your progress regularly and IF you have met your goal for that first reduction, you celebrate in a small but fun way, and then you choose another category to reduce, while maintaining the reduction from the first category.

If you are really serious, sell your gaming systems and stuff and shave your head to save on haircuts.

Your family readiness center will have a financial management counselor that can help with long term planning. If you are in the Air Force you can talk to the first sergeant about a falcon loan.

  • Equivalent-Pass-5549

Good morning. I am sorry you are in this situation. In addition to the great advice you’ve received from the others re: budgeting/financial planning, etc. you need to sit down with your First Sergeant/Senior Enlisted Advisor and let them know what is going on. They have access to many resources to help. And seriously, sharing the burden will help you immensely. Check the resources at Military One Source and your base family support center. Both have financial assistance programs. With respect to your clearance, we have moved from the five-year update to continuous vetting. You need to self-report the issue to your unit security manager and get ahead of it before they discover it on the next pull of your credit report. If you don’t self-report it will look like you are trying to hide the issue, which is a contrary to the forms you signed when you received your clearance and WILL result in disciplinary actions up to pulling your clearance. Good luck.

  • jj26meu

Debt consolidation with three on-time payments will allow you to retain your clearance and minimize the multiple interest rates.

  • KCPilot17

    >try to lower the apr/debt amount with my bank

How exactly do you plan on doing that?

What’s your budget like? Take home income, then every single dollar going out. List it all.

  • RaidenX15

Look for the Personal Financial Manager on your base. They can help you reach out to your debtors and develop a spending plan/budget.

I would recommend that your spouse accompanies you to those meetings. Having buy-in from both of you will only increase the likelihood that you go through with whatever plan you come up with.

  • ZilxDagero

Could always contact your credit card company and talk to them and see about working some type of repayment plan. Remember, the people on the other end of the phone don’t feel anyway towards you, they are basicly handed a script and told to read it. If there is a policy to help you, they’ll walk you through it. Just remember to ensure you say the keywords: Military, Hardship, Debt consolidation, etc

  • TheVanDykeProject

First go to the base food bank (most bases have one) and get food for the family. Then take the financial advice of people smarter than me.
