Contract Talks to Resume Next Week in Effort to End Hollywood’s Writers Strike

LOS ANGELES (AP) ÔÇö Contract talks that could end HollywoodÔÇÖs writers strike are set to resume next week, studios announced on Thursday.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents the industryÔÇÖs studios, streaming services, and production companies in union negotiations, has reached out to the Writers Guild of America (WGA) with the aim of resolving the ongoing strike. Both sides have agreed to restart negotiations next week as they work out the details.

“Every member company of the AMPTP is committed and eager to reach a fair deal, and to working together with the WGA to end the strike,” stated the AMPTP.

This development brings hope for a resolution to the 4 1/2 month-long strike, which has revolved around issues such as pay, job security, and regulating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the industry.

Discovery. However, the negotiations faltered as writers expressed dissatisfaction with the studios’ response to their contract proposals.

Furthermore, California lawmakers have taken a step to support striking workers by voting in favor of allowing them to claim unemployment benefits. If signed into law by Governor Newsom, this bill would provide relief not only to the actors and screenwriters on strike but also to hotel workers in Southern California. It is worth noting that the insolvency of the unemployment benefits fund in California and concerns raised by business groups about expanding eligibility may pose obstacles to this legislation.
