Extension of U.S. Small Business Administration’s Stay in East Bay

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) ÔÇö In response to the continued impact of the closure of the westbound side of the Washington Bridge on businesses east of Providence, Gov. Dan McKee announced on Friday that the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) would be extending its stay in the East Bay.

This extension comes in light of the closure of the westbound side of the Washington Bridge which has been impacting businesses in the east of Providence area. The SBA’s temporary Business Recovery Center, initially located in East ProvidenceÔÇÖs Weaver Memorial Library, was scheduled to close on Friday, Jan. 26. However, it will now be relocated to East Providence City Hall and will open at noon on Monday, Jan. 29.

The center will operate with new hours, from Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Additionally, the SBA mentioned that it will monitor the number of businesses availing the center’s services and adjust its hours accordingly to accommodate more businesses.

East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva expressed gratitude to the SBA for accepting their offer to stay in East Providence and serve the local business communities. He emphasized the importance of supporting the East Providence and East Bay business communities on this side of the bridge.

Furthermore, businesses west of the Washington Bridge will have the opportunity to meet with SBA representatives at a separate Business Recovery Center in the North Providence Public Safety Complex.

The SBA took the initiative to open its Business Recovery Centers in Rhode Island after issuing a declaration of Economic Injury Disaster for the state. This declaration allowed small business owners affected by the bridge closure to apply for working capital loans to help them navigate through these challenging times.

Rhode Island Secretary of Commerce Liz Tanner expressed gratitude towards the SBA for its commitment to assisting Rhode Islanders through the process of applying for federal assistance. She highlighted the importance of supporting small businesses during these challenging times as an investment in the stateÔÇÖs economy.

The governor’s office reported that as of Jan. 25, 667 businesses had applied for SBA loans, a testament to the significant impact of the bridge closure on local businesses.
