    NAL but have dealt with this as part of health and safety monitoring at my workplace for high risk areas.

    The employer must be registered with the ICO for the use of CCTV in the workplace and have stated the explicit reasons as to why they are using said CCTV system; CCTV can only be used in line with this registration. If a system was put in place to deter theft or other crimes, it must not be used for employee monitoring for example. You can look at the ICO website to find a CCTV checklist and employment practices code, while these aren’t legally enforcable as such, it’s a good thing to be aware of regardless.

    Hidden cameras are generally only permitted in the case of an undercover surveillance because the employer suspects that they are breaking the law and letting said employee know they are under surveillance would hinder the ability to collect the relevant evidence.

    You have the right to view any footage that shows yourself, which must generally be provided within a month of the request being made. You should not however be permitted access to footage that shows other personnel. You also have the right to request information as to how this data is collected (why), stored (including how long data is stored for, security policy) and accessed (who can access the footage, what reasons).

    In addition there must be an impact assessment to determine any negative effects that monitoring may have on employees when CCTV is installed, including if other options for monitoring available that are less invasive. The surveillance used by your employer must be reasonable and proportionate. There must also be a written CCTV monitoring policy available for you to read on your employers use of CCTV in the workplace.

    Edit: Regarding the fact that your private conversations have been recorded and listened to via the CCTV would likely be considered a breach of privacy. There is almost never a reason to have audio on an internal CCTV system as the chances are that they will overhear things that are outside the perview of the reasons the CCTV was installed (and will hear things outside the frame of view of the camera). This facility is generally not that useful, or required, for any theft prevention, health and safety (or other) monitoring reasons. The right to privacy threshold is generally higher for these systems due to the untargeted nature of the data collection, so most businesses will opt not to record audio inside their business premises just in case sensitive conversations are recorded by accident in an area that has a reasonable expectation of privacy.

    I had the exact same thing happen at my work, to the point it makes me think maybe you joined where I left after I left haha! In the end it boiled down to it essentially being against the law but with no real way of proving what he was doing/gathering concrete evidence. So I quit, best thing I ever did.

    Ask for the CCTV policy. I bet they don’t have one. If they do either they’re not following it or what it contains probably doesn’t comply with what can be registered.

    You should look at RIPA laws (regulation of investigatory powers Act) as this covers a right to privacy as part of the human rights act to ensure that surveillance is proportionate, lawful and necessary.
    Do you have anything in writing like an email where they have commented on what you were doing whilst they were not on site (therefore viewing the footage) to evidence that their use is not proportionate?

    For computer and data monitoring, your work will be required to have a policy in place that sets out what employee monitoring is taking place and for what purposes. Edit: to add, a blanket statement such as employer monitors all employees and computers is not sufficient to comply with the law. The policy must define the monitoring taking place and its purpose

    Part of this will be a data privacy impact assessment. You could ask you boss for a copy of this DPIA as it pertains to his remote monitoring of your computer.

    There should also be a DPIA in place for the CCTV monitoring.

    Although it sounds like the employer is almost certainly breaking the law with regards to the DPA and human rights, right to privacy. I’m not sure what the mechanism is to enforce or penalise this.

    This sounds like 2 previous IT companies I have worked for.
    Do you have a manager you can speak to, or is the director, the boss?

    There should be signs up at the workplace and also they must be used for the reason they were put there. If it’s for crime prevention then they can’t be used for workplace monitoring.

    You can submit a SAR to make a point – they’ll have to provide all footage of you, that doesn’t also show other people. Good luck going through 2+Tb of video and cutting the clips.

    In the end, I changed company though as the oppression was awful and I don’t want to work for someone that ultimately, doesn’t trust me.

    I would reset windows before you leave just incase any of your personal data is on there, although to be sure not to delete any company I formation as you will be commuting a crime yourself.
