Rechie Valdez’s Journey as an Entrepreneur

Rechie Valdez, the federal minister of Small Business, says she knows what it is like to be an entrepreneur. She came from a traditional 9-5 job in corporate banking but had the urge to do more than work for others.

ÔÇ£I have a creative passion,” she said in Sudbury. “It was transformative. It was not easy.ÔÇØ

Valdez even hosted a television show on entrepreneurs. She knows about the trials of accessing capital and business growing pains. ÔÇ£It was a hustle.

In the last seven months, as minister, I have travelled to Dawson City, to Atlantic Canada, here, and acknowledge the diversity of challenges faced in each region  realizing how vastly different our country is.

ÔÇ£What I have really enjoyed is learning about the nuances of the different regions. They all have dramatically different needs, including housing, labour, connectivity.ÔÇØ

She said she vicariously has known Sudbury since childhood as her father, an engineer, would often come to work on projects here.

ÔÇ£My dad would come home and tell me about Sudbury.”

In an event billed as ÔÇ£Entrepreneurship: Bridging the Gaps, Overcoming Challenges, and Powering the Canadian Economy,ÔÇØ Valdez acknowledged the role of small businesses in employing Canadians, delivering services, and being innovative and agile.

Her talk, held at BrystonÔÇÖs on the Park on Wednesday, was hosted by the Great Sudbury Chamber of Commerce and supported by the Sudbury Credit Union.

Paul Mainville, commercial manager for the Sudbury Credit Union, was happy to be the title sponsor of the luncheon. Speaking about government generally, he said ÔÇ£they have to see our realities here. We are a hardworking community. We are very proud when we go to PDAC. Sudbury businesses put us on the map.ÔÇØ

Mimi Regimbal, CEO of the Sudbury Credit Union, noted that “the Canadian economy is driven by small business. We build long-term relationships. Clients are not a number.ÔÇØ

Colleague Debbie Sokoloskie, who is in charge of member experience at the Sudbury Credit Union, said her job is to ÔÇ£ensure members have the best encouragement and support. We are friends of small business. We partner with any who want to talk.ÔÇØ

Kyle Marcus, the managing director of the Downtown Sudbury Business Improvement Area and a downtown business owner, said Valdez’s visit was a chance to connect.

ÔÇ£I look forward to (Wednesday) afternoonÔÇÖs walk around with the minister,” Marcus said. “It is important for the federal government to know what is happening on the streets of small, medium and large cities. I am grateful that she has come to investigate.ÔÇØ

Gurpreet Singh Broca, the manager of customer experience at the TD Canada Trust in Sudbury, said the experience was valuable.

ÔÇ£I have friends and family becoming local entrepreneurs,” Broca said. :I was excited to hear the ministerÔÇÖs words. She answered a lot of questions that are related to financial institutions.

“It really is valuable to be here at chamber events. It is extremely important for me to learn and know so I can take answers and ideas back to my clients. IÔÇÖve never had my own business, but I really want to have one.ÔÇØ

Ian Lane, executive director of the Northern Ontario Angels, said having Valdez “come and share her thoughts and impressions is important. What she is hearing across the nation is validation for what we are experiencing here.

“We are unique but there are similarities to Atlantic Canada. To be successful. it needs to collaborative and it takes an ecosystem. They are trying – with a variety of programs – to incentivize, respond to, and encourage the growth of small businesses.ÔÇØ
