# Understanding Credit Requirements when Buying a House
I have always heard that having 3 lines of credit is necessary when it comes to obtaining a mortgage. However, I am unsure if this requirement changes when a couple is purchasing a house together. Do they each need to have 3 lines of credit individually, or is a total of 3 lines of credit between the two of them sufficient? What are you even talking about?
I’m not sure what you mean by how many lines of credit? You only need one mortgage. Generally for a conventional mortgage you need a down payment of 20% to avoid PMI and the loan provider will check debt to income ratio. Unless you are a very high earner they don’t like too much outstanding debt. If you have a combination of high income, good credit and low debt, you are good to go. All this assumes you are in the US, I’m not sure about other countries.
I’m assuming you mean other loans to establish credit history. You only need a good credit history. Number of lines doesn’t really matter.
No lines of credit needed
20% down payment
Get a 30 year fixed mortgage no more than 35% of your take home pay preferably 30% but market is crazy
No dumb questions. I think it’d be helpful if you clarified what you mean though so we can help.
Lines of credit is something that sites like credit karma harp on to get you to apply for more lines through their site so they get referral credit.
I don’t think there is any set requirement.
Do you know what your credit score is for you and your partner? This will be one of the determining factors for your mortgage.
I think generally they look at credit score and income history and available cash. The underwriter can look deeper into your credit report but I never heard of them requiring a minimum number of lines of credit.
Pretty dumb question, thank you for your apologies.
