VICKSBURG, MS. Proposed Garbage Collection Fee Increase Announcement

In a press release this morning, Mayor Flaggs announced a proposed increase to garbage collection fees for both residents and commercial businesses in Vicksburg. The proposed changes also address how overflow, limbs, and debris will be handled in the future.

Earlier this month, during a budget hearing held on August 6, the Mayor hinted at a recommendation that residents cover half of the cost of residential trash pickup.

With the latest announcement, it was revealed that Waste Management will now charge for the pickup of limbs and debris, a service that was previously included. The city will now take on the responsibility for this additional service. Residents are advised to call the Action Line at 601-636-3411 to report a pick-up, with the city committing to pick up overflow, debris, and limbs within seven business days.

Proposed Rate Changes and Services

The Mayor plans to recommend to the Board of Aldermen an increase in monthly trash collection fees for residential services, from $16.50 to $21. This fee will cover twice-weekly trash pick-up for trash in the green bins marked with the city seal. Residents have the option to purchase an additional trash can for $25.50, with these additional cans being brown in color.

Small businesses outside of downtown Vicksburg will use the green trash cans provided by the city and have the choice to purchase additional brown bins at a rate of $25.50 per month per bin.

For commercial businesses in downtown Vicksburg, the garbage collection fee will be $40.15 per bin per month, with services provided four times a week. Businesses can opt for up to four bins at this rate.

Mayor Flaggs emphasized the need for these changes to ensure a high level of service in garbage collection. He expressed the city’s commitment to providing effective waste management and requested the community’s understanding and cooperation during this transition.

If residents require an additional trash can or a replacement, they are requested to contact the Water and Gas Department at 601-636-3414.

For any further inquiries or additional information, residents and businesses can contact Mayor George Flaggs, Jr. directly at 601-942-0492.
