Normally your obligation is about as much as ‘I have an illness or injury and am unfit for duty. At this stage I am anticipating I will be returning on x date. I will let you know by y date (a day or two prior) if this date is different/to confirm that date.
If you find out earlier you need more time off let them know as soon as you know.
If you think you might need accomodations when you return, it might be a good idea to give them more of a heads up about what’s happened.
You’re employed on a contract with leave entitlements correct? Then you have sick leave. Be sick. Get better. They will have to cope without you.

Do not tell them how or what you hurt. Take the appropriate amount of time off and medical treatment as per your doctor. Get a medical certificate for ‘unable to work for **** due to medical reasons’.

Stupid>! fucking !<HR/WHS might decide that you are unfit for your role and there are no suitable duties. I’ve known three people (different jobs) that this has happened to and it has royalty screwed with their lives. In one of these incidences the WHS person didn’t actually know what the injured persons job was and was purely assessing them off a job position description.
**Edit: i**f your part of the teachers union you may want to contact them. They might not help as this is outside of work. But they might.
You don’t have to tell them specifically. You’ve already said you hurt your back. Once you see the physio and you get a better idea of what is going on and you know a time frame, you can go back to your boss and say that it’s more serious than you thought and you estimate you’ll be off for X amount of time.
You don’t actually have to tell them what is wrong at all, but it’s better *generally* for them to have some idea so they know where to set expectations. If they ask what happened? “I was lifting something heavy and I just *knew* it was bad”. Leave it at that.
