Title: Concerns About Fraudulent Bookings and Identity Theft: Seeking Help from AI Legalese Decoder

Introduction:

Recently, my partner received an email from British Airways confirming a flight booking for next year. However, to our surprise, the booking included not only his name but also the name of a random individual. What’s more concerning is that the payment for the booking was supposedly made using a card in his name, but he does not recognize it. We checked his clear score, and there were no matching cards. Additionally, the email provided an address that is not our current residence. Upon verifying the email’s authenticity by contacting British Airways, we discovered that the booking was indeed made in my partner’s name. He successfully passed their security check by providing the address mentioned in the email.

The Issue at Hand:

Despite confirming the potential fraudulent nature of the booking, British Airways has refused to cancel it outright. Instead, they insisted that we log a ticket or complaint with their system. This has left us extremely worried about the possibility of someone using my partner’s name deceptively. It raises concerns that someone might have created credit cards under his identity, although this remains unconfirmed. Curiously, if the person who made the booking shares the same name as my partner, why would they use the wrong email address? Both my partner’s name and email address are relatively common, but surely one would know their own email.

4. Monitor Financial Accounts: To ensure no further unauthorized activities occur, we will rigorously monitor my partner’s financial accounts, credit reports, and statements for any suspicious transactions or indications of identity theft.

It genuinely just sounds that someone with the same name as your partner has accidentally mistyped their email

  • Gasping_Jill_Franks

I have this kind of thing happen to me more than you’d think.

I was an early-adopter on Gmail, and got a good [email protected] email address (for my pre-marriage name) for which both names are fairly normal. As a result there are a couple of people that seem to not know their own email (which has a single number after the last name), and have a couple of times managed to book things / pay for things that I got the confirmation for.

Admittedly, I’ve not had something as major as a flight booking, (surely they would have had to have confirmed validation on the email address?), but I’ve had restaurant bookings in Kenya, Royal Mail tracking on live insects, and other more mundane stuff.

I think someone with the same name as your husband has made an honest mistake. Genuinely, the easiest and kindest thing to do would be to explain that to BA, and ask them to contact their customer by letter or phone and confirm the correct email address.

  • Wasacel

It could be a mistake, people with common names will almost definitely find there is someone with the same birthday and name, likely have similar emails as well. I have read about people who have there credit report merged with a stranger because so many details of their identities match.

The best thing to do is carry out regular checks with all the credit reference agencies and have his credit frozen. For now, operate under the assumption this is a case of identify theft until you can confirm otherwise.

  • fizzypopx

NAL, but this happened to me. I received an email confirmation of a holiday booking in my name and panicked. When I contacted the holiday company it turned out that their customer had the same name as me and a very similar email ( .co.uk vs .com). It was a genuine mistake at their end and easily resolved, hopefully itÔÇÖll be the same for your partner.

  • Fancy-Mortgage8343

So someone has either stolen his identity and opened a bank account in his name and has his name on their passport etc or someone has the same name and possibly birthday as him.

It looks like the latter and someone sent a confirmation email to the wrong email, or your unassuming suspect missed a dot or underscore in their email and you two use very similar emails. Sometimes i send my mum emails to not her email address because she does firstname.surname and my dad does surname.firstname and i type it wrong.

Eitherway, lodge your complaint to BA and ask they look into this, maybe contact your bank or the bank the card is from and talk to them about identity fraud just to be safe. Otherwise no crime has been committed yet, we cant know for sure someone stole his identity yet. You’ll have to do more digging.

  • Efficient_Library436

If you know their address, the kindest thing to do would be to see if you can look them up on Facebook or LinkedIn and send them a message to let them know and ask them to update it.

  • NeitherCoffee5808

This happened to me, but with someone buying a brand new car! I had emails sent to me with my name, different address in Ireland! IÔÇÖm England! I freaked out, and called them, and it was all a silly mistake with the email and a dot between first
    and last name

  • Stefie25

Sounds very much like someone has a similar email to your husband & mistyped it. Like your husbands email is firstnamelastname@gmail & theirs is firstname.lastname@gmail. BA might not even recognize the period as a spacer in the email & automatically disregarded it. I wouldnÔÇÖt cancel the flight. The booker will probably do so when they realize they didnÔÇÖt get the confirmation. Just monitor his credit score but highly doubt itÔÇÖs a stolen identity. More likely someone with the same name.

  • dunredding

Please donÔÇÖt cancel the flights of complete strangers (whose name and address you now know), it would be quite inconvenient for them.

  • Itchy-Ad4421

For years IÔÇÖve been getting emails for someone with the same name – he lives about 40 miles away. I guess o have the email address that he thinks he has. I get dvla documentation and holiday booking confirmations all the time.
Contacted his partner (her details were on one of the confirmations) a few times and told her to change it / let him know. Still happening.
    Most likely the same here

  • warlord2000ad

    NAL

I’ve had exactly this with BA about 5 years ago. The web security is terrible, if the customer puts down the wrong email address they literally email you all the details required to login and make changes. I was able to login and changes seats etc. I contacted BA and they couldn’t care less so I just left it be.

  • DarkAngelAz

Did you ring a number on the email or search for BA number?

  • N9242Oh

First thing I’d do is check clearscore to see if a credit card has been taken out in his name.
    NAL

  • Englishontrail

You should report this to border control or another entity that ensures safe flying, rather than simply cancelling, and either buy access to a credit monitoring service or contact your partner’s bank for a suggested service and guidance.

While it could be someone who used the wrong email, that’s a pretty odd mistake, and unfortunately impersonation is very common in human trafficking. Is the flight destination out of country?

Better to be cautious with your partners credit/ identity and potentially just put someone through an investigative conversation over a wrong email than not report it and potentially suffer identity theft.
