Heading: Seeking Advice on Managing College Schedule while Receiving SSDI for Mental Health

Content:

Thank you in advance for any experience, knowledge, or advice you can share. I started receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits for mental health-related issues approximately three months ago, despite being in my early thirties. However, I have set my sights on pursuing a part-time college education, consisting of a manageable six credit hour schedule at a local institution. My intention is to fund this educational endeavor using federal loans.

While I am eager to embark on this educational journey, I remain concerned about the potential repercussions it may have on my upcoming Continuing Disability Review (CDR) scheduled for 2026. In particular, I fear that my enrollment in college courses could negatively impact my chances of successfully passing the CDR or, worse yet, prompt the Social Security Administration (SSA) to accelerate the review, subjecting me to it prior to the anticipated time frame.

Thus, I find myself questioning the validity of these concerns. Has anyone encountered a similar situation or possesses firsthand experience in how the SSA upholds cases like mine? I earnestly seek guidance to navigate this complex intersection between continuing my education and maintaining my SSDI benefits.

You would have to say that you are attending college on the form

Also, look into the financial aid programs at the school. Community colleges in my state offer free tuition (but not fees) for people on SSDI and SSI.

You can also talk to Vocational Rehab about paying for education to help you return to work.

Just some suggestions to try and reduce or eliminate the loans.

So, there is no question that age, education and work history can factor into a disability determination when an applicant’s condition does not meet a listing. But a 6 credit course would not move the needle.

Another thing to bear in mind is the Medical Improvement standard. Once upon a time when the DDSs denied applicants and ALJs approved them, a gigantic number of CDRs (CDIs in those days) resulted in cessation. That was during the Reagan Administration when it was believed that doing more CDIs would save the trust fund. And the number of yearly CDIs was increased a lot. This led to very bad press. Rather than get Disability Examiners and Medical Consultants on the same page as ALJs, SSA came up with the Medical Improvement standard. What that means is that in current CDRs, the DDS would have to show a medical improvement from where you were at when benefits were approved. Without a doubt, a 6 credit course would not compromise that.

Unless you have a university degree you should be eligible for grants. Check with financial aid.
