Small Businesses in Ohio Benefit from Inclusion Grants

Several small businesses in the region, ranging from mushroom farms to aviation support, have been able to thrive and grow thanks to the Inclusion Grants provided by JobsOhio, the state’s economic development agency.

Obtaining an Inclusion Grant requires the business to be at least 51% owned by a minority, woman, veteran, or person with a disability. Additionally, the project must be located in a “distressed” zip code.

The primary aim of these grants is to support small businesses in Ohio that typically face challenges in accessing funding sources available to larger corporations. This initiative has opened up new opportunities for entrepreneurs to expand and flourish.

Recently, a group of local business owners shared their success stories during a lunch event organized by Montgomery County commissioners, Dayton Development Coalition members, and the JobsOhio team at West Social Tap and Table in West Dayton.

JobsOhio President and CEO, J.P. Nauseef, stated that the grants range from $25,000 to $100,000. Recipients of the grants have utilized the funds for various purposes, such as procuring equipment and hiring additional staff.

So far, approximately 400 Inclusion Grants have been awarded throughout Ohio, with about 50 grants specifically benefiting the greater Dayton area.

Nauseef emphasized that small businesses are essential to the economy, and economic growth should be fostered beyond major cities. Investment in regions like southeastern Ohio and smaller towns is crucial to maintaining economic momentum and creating employment opportunities.

A prime example of the positive impact of Inclusion Grants is Guided by Mushrooms, a specialty mushroom farm in New Lebanon. With a $30,000 grant from JobsOhio, the company was able to purchase new equipment, significantly enhancing their production speed and capacity.

Skuld, a company specializing in 3D printing replacement parts quickly, received a $50,000 grant. This enabled them to purchase additional equipment, thereby streamlining their production processes and contributing to environmental sustainability.

Miami Valley Metal Recycling, owned by Terrence William, utilized the grant to expand their workforce by hiring two more employees.

Onome Scott-Emuakpor, a former aviation industry professional, capitalized on an Inclusion Grant to bolster his small business, which focuses on 3D printing within the aviation sector. Given the capital-intensive nature of his industry, every dollar gained through grants like these is invaluable in driving growth and success.
