Well, assuming your employer is legit, they would have taxed your pay at a higher rate
    See [ATO link](https://www.ato.gov.au/Rates/Fortnightly-tax-table/#:~:text=When%20a%20TFN%20has%20not,have%20not%20quoted%20their%20TFN)

Just ask your payroll department and asked for a tax form and fill in your information and your TFN.

If you have multiple jobs at the moment, make sure you only claim for the tax free threshold in 1 of your jobs only.

Wait till end of financial year (June) and submit your tax return. If you have been taxed more than what you should have paid, you get a refund.

I would check your previous years payslip and workout if you have been taxed higher . And speak with a tax agent if it’s worth/possible to submitting prior years return.

Assuming the companies were semi-competent, you’ve been giving free money to the ATO for all five jobs.

The system is set up to be in your financial interests to provide the TFN. It doesn’t affect the employer’s costs, the taxes comes out of your pay. You pay the highest possible tax rate if you haven’t provided it within the 4 weeks of starting.

  • oneaccounti

You probably lost a lot of money as they probably taxed you a higher percentage or if below the free threshold you didnÔÇÖt have access to get that back

  • Frank9567

You’ve paid taxes. Lol. It gets taken out in advance, and you are paying *higher* tax than you should have been in all 5 jobs.

It’s likely that the Australian Taxation Office owes *you* money, lolol.

Either that, or your employer has been engaging in tax fraud, in which case, when they get caught, you’ll get asked to pay tax.

So, by not getting a tax file number, you’ve either given the Tax Office a nice interest free loan/gift, or will get caught up in your employer’s troubles if they get caught.

Getting a tax file number and lodging it will probably be the highest paying, low risk investment you could make. Like 47% of your pay for those 5 jobs.

How were you set up in payroll software without a TFN? Even if your employers were withholding a higher rate of tax, how did they send the PAYG to the ATO for you? With Single Touch Payroll, I didnt think that would be possible Were you paid in cash?

  • gnarleyhart

Tax for minors is a tricky thing certain types of income can be taxed at a higher rate if you are a minor and certain incomes can be taxed at a lower rate for minors.

I mentioned that previous part just to indicate that you may not have missed out on as much income as you assume if some of your previous employment was before you turned 18.

Additionally like everyone else your first $18,200 is within the tax free freshhold,
Than your remaining income will usually be taxed at different rates depending on brackets, i.e. income earnt from 18,201 to 45,000 is taxed at 19%
This is why an individual can have a marginal tax rate of 34.5% and be earning a salary with that tax bracket, but have a average tax rate of say 18.9% (for someone earning 61K)

I hope that all makes sense,
Most of the time under normal circumstances your employer will withhold tax from your pay at the marginal tax rate of your current income bracket,
If you haven’t provided your employer your TFN details your employer has to withhold tax from your pay at the highest tax bracket of 45%

It would be safe to assume you have only been receiving a small portion of income compared to what you should have been being paid for a few years, it also would be fair to assume that most of the “overpaid” “over withheld” tax is missing forever as you have moved employers.

Do a tax return as soon as possible to recover lost income, if any.
Give your employer TFN detail ASAP,
Additionally give your superannuation provider and your saving account / bank account TFN details ASAP

  • the_doesnot

Yes tell your employer and you should also update your bank with your TFN. If you earn any interest they withhold tax at the highest rate if you donÔÇÖt provide a TFN.

Might be worth looking into your old payslips to see if you can get any tax back, a tax agent can help you. Check the payslips to see how much tax was withheld.

  • kuribosshoe0

    > ive never paid taxes my entire life

Yeah you have. By not providing a TFN youÔÇÖve been paying more than you were required to.

  • auscrash

Trying not to be disrespectful.. but I had a giggle at “paid taxes my entire life” my mind went to wow, someone has gone decades with no TFN?… and then “I’m 19 if that matters” finished the sentence lol, so “entire life” is what like maybe 4yrs at best hehehe? Sorry I just found it funny – from someone that has been in the workforce coming up on 40yrs.

Anyway, seems extremely suspicious to me you were not asked to supply TFN when hired. If not are they paying cash in hand dodgy or something?

The correct process is an employer is obligated to ensure you have a TFN and if you cannot or do not supply one, they are supposed to tax you at the highest rate. In this case you should get a tax return.

The next suspicious thing is how the hell have you done your taxes for “your entire life” with no TFN???? It shows your TFN on your tax return.

As others have said, yes you should talk to payroll at your employer and provide your TFN.

  • Kellamitty

More on ‘you probably lost a lot of money’, if you’ve been taxed at 50% all these years, then likely there’s a lot you can get back.

Normally, when you log into mygov then into ATO it will show you the returns you haven’t done but if your employer never had your TFN then their group certificates might not have been able to be linked to you. This means, you will need to do a tax return for that year, and enter the information yourself.

Rest assured you have paid tax, and you can still get the refund, if you can gather the paperwork.

Do you have the group certificates from every job? For every year? If you started work in say 2019 and you have a 2019 financial year group certificate, you could do it yourself but the online etax system might not offer you the ability to start a return for that year. If they don’t have you down as not submitting for that year, it’s because they don’t know that you worked that year. When you log in, under outstanding tax returns, there might be nothing there.

So you’ll probably need a tax agent to do it. Gather the group certificates from every job, and book an appointment with a tax agent to lodge a tax return for every year you have worked. Email the companies you have worked for and say hi I’m blah blah I would like a copy of my 2020 group certificate etc if you don’t have them. It’ll be a hassle but you’ll end up with money. YOUR money. Writing 5 emails and booking one appointment might get you a couple thousand bucks back.

  • aquila-audax

When you get a job you’re supposed to complete a Tax Declaration form with your personal details and TFN which payroll then submits to the ATO. I can’t believe payroll didn’t chase you for it, unless you’ve been working shady cash in hand jobs this whole time.

  • latending

If you don’t supply a TFN you’re usually taxed at the highest marginal rate.

You should supply your TFN to your bank, employer, etc… and then submit tax returns for those years. Not sure if the ATO will prefill the details or how long it will take.
