MarionMade! Stories: Gary Ferriman Supports Entrepreneurs in Marion County

A Visionary Local Business Leader
A local business leader, Gary Ferriman, born and raised in Marion, is passionate about helping other entrepreneurs succeed. The president of Showplace Rentals, Ferriman has recently partnered with Alluvial Private Wealth to sponsor The Forge business classes in Marion County. These classes, which are free and open to aspiring or established small business owners, will begin on August 24, 6 p.m., at Marion Technical College. The top participants in the classes will compete for a chance to win $2,500 in prize money on October 12 at the Alluvial Private Wealth Forge Competition.
Ferriman’s sponsorship of The Forge stems from his belief that with diligence, the right tools, and the courage to take risks, any business can thrive. He firmly believes that nearly anyone driven can operate and succeed in a small business. Furthermore, Ferriman sees the influx of young entrepreneurs injecting vibrancy into the downtown area and believes Marion will continue to attract small to mid-sized businesses due to the outstanding quality of life the community offers.
Ferriman’s upbringing in a working-class family has influenced his drive and determination. Both his parents, Bill Ferriman and Kathy Anderson, worked hard to provide for their family. Additionally, his grandparents on both sides were business owners. These influences shaped Ferriman’s strong work ethic from a young age, as he delivered newspapers, mowed lawns, and worked as a caddy.
Ferriman’s commitment to continual learning has been instrumental in his business success. He attributes a significant turning point in his career to his dedicated study of Stephen R. Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” in the early ’90s. Ferriman attended leadership training at Covey’s center in Utah multiple times per year, eventually becoming a licensed facilitator for some of their courses. His newfound insights and skills made a positive impact on both his business and family life.

In addition to his business ventures, Ferriman takes pride in creating a positive work environment for his employees and building long-term relationships with loyal customers. He actively supports various local groups, including the United Way, the Boys and Girls Club, the YMCA, and many more. As a member of the Marion Area Chamber of Commerce, Ferriman remains dedicated to the betterment of his community.
The Forge, initiated by the Leadership Marion Class of the Marion Chamber in 2017, has proven to be a catalyst for local entrepreneurship. Past participants in The Forge have successfully launched or expanded businesses, including A Taste of Memphis, Attaboys, the Explore-It-Torium Children’s Museum, PFM Fleet Service, Sweada Mae Art Caf├®, Sights Unseen Travel, and Spruce and Sparrow. The Forge business classes cover a wide range of important topics, including business planning, financing, record keeping, marketing, and more.
