You are receiving mother’s benefits. One of the conditions for entitlement is having a dependent child of the wage earner in your care. If this is no longer the case, you need to convert from mother’s benefits to Widow’s Benefits. You can do that because you’re now old enough. I believe your benefit amount will be lowered but not by much.

SSA will have no issue with his change of situation for his benefits.

  • Suckerforcats

I would be concerned about this. HeÔÇÖs vulnerable to exploitation and as someone who investigates that stuff, I would be concerned that they would take him to the ssa office to change themselves to be payee and take his money. I saw this in my previous job with adult protective services a lot and in my currently role as a payee reviewer for SSA. People take people in and then spend the money on themselves and neglect the adult.

Even if you are payee, they can take him down to the office and change it. He will be far away from you and you wonÔÇÖt be able to make sure his needs are being met by them consistently. Since heÔÇÖs already on benefits, look into the Medcaid waiver. They can set him up with residential or independent living that he can afford, part time job, adult day programs, independent living skills training or staffed residential housing all paid for by Medicaid and a portion of his social security check. This would keep him close to you until you are sure heÔÇÖs capable of living with someone or can do things on his own. If you trust the friend, keep your eyes open for any funny business to make sure they truly are helping him and not just using him for his money

At 60 you qualify for regular widows benefits. But it might be a reduced amount.

  • Djscratchcard

That wouldn’t change anything for his benefits. Your payment requires you to have the child in care, which you do not if he doesn’t live with you. You could convert to normal widows benefits, although the amount would be slightly lower.

  • lindaleolane812

I don’t know the answers to this question however I would throw this out there do you feel like he’s responsible to handle his own financial business if not id definitely suggest you be his rep payee unfortunately so many people see folks like your son as a push over to be nice will be his friend/girlfriend until the money is gone then he won’t see them again till next deposit date. If you trust his girlfriend or friends to do right by him that’s good but if they take advantage of him then no. I have a 23 year old son who’s mentally challenged I’m still cooking he does clean his room and take a bath only because he’s been on the same bath schedule since he was 10 or so. Repetitive in nature based on his teachings he loves people and I’m afraid for him honestly because he’s a lamb amongst the wolves I know I have to let him go and I plan to but I want him to live in a group home with his peers he will be simi independent but right now we live in Florida planning to relocate services here are horrible for developmentally disabled individuals

  • Effective_Job_4492

Have you gone to court to become his legal guardian? If not, you really should.

  • pocketcrackers

Share expenses? Sounds like theyÔÇÖre going to take advantage of his income knowing youÔÇÖre several hundreds of miles away.
Why not just leave him in your own home where you know heÔÇÖs safe and cared for relieving you of the worry and the added travel. They are grown adults, and should be able to take care of themselves without using your disabled sons income to supplement their missing income

  • Starbuck522

    Sorry for your loss!

  • timespassing_

This sounds like a terrible idea. I hate to be cruel, but your son is ripe to be taken advantage of by this friend. Hundreds of miles away and they need him for financial support? No. Hard no. I may listen to too many murder podcasts, but this sounds like the beginning of a terrible ending.

  • Fine-Dimension-7146

So confusing right. Just stay diligent

  • MsSeraphim

call your local social security office and ask them.

  • tsidaysi

You can a child who is totally dependent on you.

Find a group home for adults similar to your son quickly please. Please do not do what my in-laws did and just assume if you pass “the state or someone will take him” because it is not true.

If, as he ages, his health deteriorates many nursing homes will not take anyone under 62 on Medicaid. We are living the nightmare now.

The nursing home that will take him is a horror show: no workers and worse no training. Not proper training.

You are worried about money. He is a grown man, ready to move out. Find a safe place where he will be treated very well and send him there. Please.

  • Fine-Dimension-7146

    Something to look
Into for him. His expenses will rise because he is moving out. Disability SSI needs to know that and his payment may increase. Not sure about yours. IÔÇÖve been trying to figure that one out myself

  • tsidaysi

You have a child completely dependent on your. My bad.

  • irishkathy

At age 60, you are eligible for survivors benefits even without a child. You should go to SS to update your record. Your disabled child may be entitled to more if they are not sharing a home with you.

  • JRThe2ndAct

As others stated you need to switch to widows. My biggest concern is I assume youÔÇÖre his rep payee. If the rep is on their job theyÔÇÖd look into you being the best option.(Not to say you arenÔÇÖt)
That far a distance is concerning though
