Amid the month-long celebrations and fiestas filled with mouthwatering dishes like empanadas and enchiladas, Bryan natives Isabel Villeda and Jesse Martinez are aiming to enrich the Hispanic community in a unique way ÔÇô by promoting fitness.

Hispanic culture is widely recognized for its delectable food, but Villeda and Martinez wanted to bring something different to the Bryan College Station community. In 2018, they opened Avenge Fitness, a gym that caters primarily to Hispanics and Latinos.

With each individual having their own desired body and health goals, achieving these goals often feels like an act of revenge against one’s own self-image. This notion inspired Villeda and Martinez to choose the name Avenge Fitness.

Villeda explains, “The name was inspired by the Avengers, but also by the desire to take revenge on the barriers that hold us back in our fitness journey.”

However, the duo’s aim goes beyond fitness. They want to break the language barrier that often deters Hispanics and Latinos from joining traditional, large-scale gyms.

Villeda adds, “It is important for us to bring fitness to this community because many Latinos believe they won’t find anyone who speaks their language or that they will feel out of place in a big gym.”

Avenge Fitness is not just a gym owned by Hispanics, but a welcoming space where locals can feel culturally embraced by the staff. In fact, several members of the gym are small business owners of taquerias, Mexican restaurants, and more, creating a sense of community among themselves, as shared by Villeda.

The gym’s mission, “Change Your Life With Us,” aims to empower its members regardless of their fitness level, whether they are beginners or elite competitors.
