Utah Mother Sentenced to Prison for Child Abuse
Ruby Franke, a YouTube influencer and mother from Utah, has been sentenced to at least four years in prison for child abuse. In a tearful apology in court, Franke expressed her remorse for her actions. She previously pleaded guilty to starving and abusing her children.
Along with her former business partner Jodi Hildebrandt, Franke received an identical sentence. The judge imposed four terms of one to 15 years each, with the sentences running consecutively, the maximum for each count under Utah law. The state’s parole board will ultimately determine how much time they will serve. Franke has 30 days to appeal the decision.
Utah prosecutor Eric Clarke described the living conditions of two of Franke’s children, aged nine and 11 at the time, as a “concentration camp-like setting” and labeled Franke as a significant threat to the community. According to Mr. Clarke, the children were regularly denied food, water, beds to sleep in, and almost all forms of entertainment.
Amidst tears, Franke apologized to her children in court, acknowledging her disorientation and skewed perception of right and wrong. She blamed her belief that the world was an evil place, filled with authorities that control, harmful hospitals, brainwashing government agencies, dishonest church leaders, protective husbands, and allegedly mistreated children.
Franke and Hildebrandt’s arrest in August 2023 came after Franke’s malnourished 12-year-old son sought help from a neighbor, escaping Hildebrandt’s house in Ivins, Utah. This marked the end of a controversial YouTube career, during which Franke amassed over two million subscribers to her channel, 8 Passengers, which she began in 2015. The channel’s popularity declined, and it was deleted in 2022, following growing suspicions and criticism regarding Franke’s parenting methods.
