But I thought we didnā€™t want to work?

  • sirensinger17

Great thing about being a nurse is that I can just pick up extra shifts and overtime instead of getting a 2nd job

    *Cries*

I’m so exhausted, and our nurse to patient ratios are unsafe cause healthcare facilities refuse to hire an adequate amount of staff

  • VirtualWord2524

Condolences to my friend getting paid like $24 an hour but doing Lyft/Uber around his day job and weekends because he has a kid on the way and dreams of buying the cheapest condo they can in driving distance to family

Also condolences to my friend finishing his engineering PhD with student loans debt dating back to undergrad but drives a 15 year old car in a physical science/engineering that does a lot on location work where that location is dotted all over a region of the country. Also dreams of buying a condo too. High earnings potential, probably higher than us non-phds, but his starting pay is lower than where everyone else got to with 5+ years of work experience plus we all have 5+ years of retirement contributions, savings, and additional investments. And PhD sounds like hell for 5 years from everyone I’ve talked to (I know people that had ranges of self harm)

Condolences to my friend who had a good paying job, non finance/engineering, like $35/hr but got laid off and took over half a year to get a job that paid over $20/hr so has been grinding rideshare/food delivery ever since and will continue regardless of getting a good paying job

  • brk51

I’m on year 3 of bartending with an Engineering job during the week, but I’m coming close to finally giving it up.

  • imakepoorchoices2020

Did any one read the article?

5.3% of America is working a second job. Up from 4.8%.

Itā€™s not great, but not chicken little the sky is falling.

  • YoDo_GreenBackReaper

I would think we re on our 3rd job by now.

  • Bankrunner123

This is a bad measure of struggle. If you look historically, people tend to work second jobs more during “good” times, and less than bad times. In part, bc you have to be able to get a second job in the first place to have this problem. Folks in the great financial crisis didn’t all quit their second jobs bc they were doing well, they did it bc they lost them!

    https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/LNS12026620

There are three levels that folks go through, each one being better than the prior.

    1. Working a low wage job, unable to get more hours or another job (what happens in recessions)
    2. Working two low wage jobs or more hours to boost your earnings to make ends meet (what happens in good times with abundant jobs)
    3. Working one decent paying job and actually having a life (also happens more in good times, ideally everyone would be here).

What were seeing is folks go from 1 to 2. And at the margin, that is good.

    Should check out dataannotation.tech

  • No_Serve_540

    Stonks go up.

  • CBerg1979

I am sorry I bought a new air fryer.

  • Character-Two-7565

I literally can count on 1 hand how many people I know that do not have some kind of second job. This is life for us in 2023.
The last time I had to work 2 jobs was 2018.

  • Kooky-Leopard-1516

Bidenomics is working well I see.

  • itsallrighthere

That’s a crappy way to get a low unemployment number.

  • superadmin_1

    Meanwhile – in real news:

    # The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits fell by 24,000 to 209,000 on the week ending November 18th, dropping sharply from the three-month high in the previous week and well below market expectations of 225,000. In the meantime, continuing claims fell by 22,000 to 1,840,000 in the previous week, retreating from the two-year high hit in the previous report. The result indicates that the slowdown in the labor market has not fully materialized yet

  • No_Peach_7265

Thank you Biden, and Camilla. We really appreciate you making our lives and an absolute hell.

  • True_Juggernaut3100

Lol, can you tell me where they are at because I can’t get my employees to do the one they have.

  • Chrodesk

    actually… a good thing.

the higher your education, the more likely you are to have 2 jobs advance degrees, college, some college, HS, some HS 1/2/3/4/5 in order.

its often driven by people operating personal businesses rather than the stereotypical moonlighting. also not shocking in the labor shortage market that people are increasingly compelled to do side work due to demand.

  • nbajam40k

I thought about picking up a second job but it makes more sense to just work overtime every week, so at least the extra hours pay at a higher rate.. perks of being at an understaffed hospital I guess šŸ«

  • [deleted]

Taking a second job does more harm than good. It digs you deeper into the hole by taking all of your time up. You will never have the time to look for an easier way to survive.

  • Bear_necessities96

    Ok Iā€™m good

  • Used-Pianist723

In my job we work for one of the biggest companies in the world, we make above average $, half of the employees have second jobs, this is not the American dream!!!! Greed is King in the US.

  • Imaginary_Artichoke

Not there yet, but I want to cause Iā€™m bored

  • Adorable-Win-9349

Then me who just quit a job to travel for a month. Lol

  • ChuckoRuckus

This is nothing new. More Americans started working second jobs every year for at least a couple decades.

  • justaguywadog

    Dammit Biden

  • justaguywadog

    I work 3

  • Southern-Yam-1811

I have a WFH corporate job, went remote during Covid and I am still WFH. Hardly any spend on vehicles now. Itā€™s the most Iā€™ve ever made. I started a second job for the first time in my life. Iā€™ve always been able to get by. 2 income household, family, itā€™s pretty depressing.
