The Challenges of Living with Multiple Psychiatric Issues
I have come to a point where I feel the need to openly discuss my psychiatric issues. Over the years, I have been diagnosed with several conditions, including Psychosis, Bi-polar disorder (the specific type remains uncertain), OCD, and Schizophrenia. While people around me, particularly my parents, acknowledge my intelligence, they also understand that my conditions impose limitations on me. Coping with hearing voices throughout the day and being unable to sleep until the early hours of the morning due to these voices can be incredibly rough.
Unfortunately, these challenges have been a part of my life for the past 15 years, with the last seven being the most difficult. Especially in the past 1.5 months, my psychiatric health has taken a drastic downturn, with the voices persistently attacking me.
My mental health struggles are well-documented, with 15 years’ worth of medical records supporting my illness. Additionally, I have been involuntarily committed on three or four occasions. These circumstances frequently lead to feelings of desperation, making me question whether I will ever find freedom and wellness.
I emphasize that this is not a plea for pity but an expression of my personal truth. Unfortunately, over the past 15 years, I have not experienced any significant improvements in my condition. As the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) mentioned during the hearing, I have been unable to hold a job for more than three months due to the severity of my condition. The anguish and sadness caused by the voices are so intense that even at 36 years old, I sometimes find myself on the verge of tears, overwhelmed by a sense of hopelessness.
Recently, I attended my first ALJ hearing, and the possibility that they may not approve my claim breaks my heart. Throughout the last 15 years, I have relied on my elderly parents for support. My mother, at 78 years old, and my father, at 82 years old, have taken care of all my needs, including paying for my housing, food, medications, and accompanying me to doctor appointments. The thought of losing their support if they were to pass away leaves me feeling lost.
During the ALJ hearing, my attorney and I discovered that the Vocational Witness (VW) found no jobs under two hypothetical questions, but did find three jobs under another. These jobs included Dish Washer, Car Cleaner, and Lumber Sorter. However, according to the guidelines of the Social Security Administration (SSA), if a claimant is found capable of working under one of the hypothetical questions, it often results in an automatic denial.
To be fair, the judge asked the VW if there were any jobs available if I were off task 20% of the time, to which the VW replied with a negative response. Subsequently, my attorney asked if there were any jobs for an individual who misses 2 to 3 days of work a month, and again, the VW answered in the negative. Despite these questions, I fear that, based on the SSA determination guidelines, I may still face an automatic denial, which is devastating because I have very little to my name. Winning my case would not only provide necessary financial support but also entitle me to two years of backpay due to the lengthy application process.
I am left wondering if there is still a possibility of approval, even if the VW managed to find three hypothetical jobs during the hearing. This uncertainty weighs heavily on my mind as I navigate the challenges posed by my condition and strive for a better future.

****** just grabbed a
I know its hard not to be discouraged, but it sounds like your medical records will support a favorable decision. The waiting is the hardest part, it causes you to doubt everything. Our attorney explained that it is common to hear some jobs listed during the hypothetical, so that is NOT an automatic denial.
My husbands VE stated 2 jobs on the 2nd hypothetical, but the judge followed up with asking if he needed an additional 20 min break due to anxiety would those jobs still be available. The VE answered no, needing an additional break is considered an accommodation, therefore they cannot use those jobs to determine you can work. My husband received fully favorable from that judge.
The judge can decide to agree or disagree with the VE. That is only part of the evidence used to make a decision. The exams my husband had done through SS stated he had no limitations, but the judge stated in her decision that their exams were not persuasive because his medical records showed his limitations. It can seem like the cards are stacked against you, but honestly I think you have a strong case & your hearing sounds positive to me.
