Special Task Force Arrests Accused in One-Time Password Sharing Scam with Suspected Links to Pakistan Intelligence

The Special Task Force of Odisha crime branch announced on Friday that they have made another arrest in the one-time password-sharing scam, which is believed to have connections to Pakistani Intelligence operatives. The agency stated that earlier, six individuals had already been apprehended in relation to the same case.

The recently apprehended individual, identified as Mohammad Ekbal Hussain, was captured in Assam’s Nagaon district on September 19. The agency provided this information in a statement released on Friday.

On the same day, Hussain appeared before a local court in Nagaon. After obtaining five days of transit remand, he was brought to Bhubaneswar. As per the Special Task Force’s statement, he will be presented before the Bhubaneswar court today.

Ajaya Narayan Pankaj, Inspector General STF Odisha, confirmed that six individuals had already been arrested in connection with this case.

“During the investigation, it was discovered that Hussain had been in contact with Abhijit Deshmukh, a previously apprehended suspect. Additionally, he was in communication with Khurram, also known as Abdul Hamid, who is suspected to be a Pakistan Intelligence Officer,” the statement added.

The statement further mentioned, “Hussain directly sold numerous WhatsApp Account OTPs, Telegram Account OTPs, and Mule / Ghost accounts to Hamid.”

“After Pathani Samanta Lenka, the main accused, and his associates were apprehended, Hussain turned off his phone and went into hiding,” the statement revealed.

During the investigation, it was uncovered that Hussain had utilized at least 37 IMEI numbers (handsets) and over 500 SIM cards.

“The accused admitted to his crimes and confessed that he had been selling OTPs for WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram-activated counterfeit SIMs, as well as Mule / Ghost Accounts for two years. He claimed to earn between Ôé╣50,000-60,000 per month,” the statement disclosed.

Based on his statement, the accused provided information about other individuals involved in his hometown. The police are currently verifying these claims.

Their method of operation involved using mobile phones for a month before disposing of them in the river to evade police tracking, the statement concluded.
