## Living Situation with Ex-Girlfriend

My ex-girlfriend and I purchased a condo together, but now our relationship has deteriorated to the point where we cannot stand each other. Despite our mutual dislike, we are still living together, as neither of us can afford to buy the other out. Our communication is minimal, with me relegated to sleeping on the couch while she has taken over the bedroom. Unfortunately, I am unable to leave the living situation due to financial constraints, as I am still responsible for paying the mortgage and cannot afford rent elsewhere.

The situation has escalated to the point where my ex-girlfriend has begun making false abuse claims against me to the police. In the past week alone, she has called the authorities on me twice, alleging abuse. However, upon arrival, the police found no evidence of such abuse but rather noted signs of a mental health crisis on her part. Despite the lack of evidence, I was warned by the officers that encountering the wrong cop could have severe consequences for me. In response, I am installing security cameras this week to protect myself.

Sorry it didn’t work out. Sounds like a nasty situation.┬á

You bought the condo together… Meaning you are both on the title? If so You can go to court and get a court ordered sale to force her to sell the property and then you split the money.

  • shazbottled

Apply to court to sell. You need to be very careful and best case get out of there. Criminal charges is not worth staying in the home.

  • Fauxtogca

Get a lawyer and you can force the sale of the condo. IÔÇÖd have your phone on standby to record at all times.

  • FutureAd1295

Dude get out. One charges are laid, there is no easy out. It will cost tens of thousands in legal fees, ruin you mentally and physically, and she will undoubtedly blast it around to all your friends.

Force the sale in court. Take a loan, move back to your parents, sleep on a friend’s couch, whatever it is. Do it and force the sale ASAP.

I’m telling you this as someone who went through a false accusation. Despite the previous cops nothing that it was a mental health crisis, it will still take a long time to resolve if charges are laid. It will be much cheaper for you to do a short term rental for 6 months while you sort the rest out.

She has shown her cards. Fortunately these cops were decent. Many are not. If she punches herself or takes a picture of herself with a bruise, you will be arrested.

Consider your job. Consider your future jobs. Most places do background checks nowadays.

Not only will you have to have the charges withdrawn (and likely pay for some sort of counselling [anger/abuse], which is already upwards of a thousand dollars) to get them withdrawn, you will have to have your records purged.

Get. Out. Now. I’m serious, youll feel safer sleeping on a bench.

    As far as the sale:
Find a lawyer, book a consultation, ask about getting an order forcing the sale through an application under the Partition Act

The false abuse allegations: no clue.

  • TCNW

OP, youÔÇÖre playing with fire staying there. Cameras are a good idea, but still thatÔÇÖs super risky.

If you can move back to your parents or a friends until you can get a court ordered sale you should.

But donÔÇÖt even step foot into that place without those cameras recording

  • Aggressive_Today_492

Get a VAR (voice activated recorder) and/or a camera to keep on you all the time – to cover your back against any criminal charges. One party consent is all that is needed.

Apply to court to sell the property.

  • silverfashionfox

Move out. Stop paying mortgage. Use the money for rent. Your presence there is not helping either of you. See a lawyer about forced sale – to happen before foreclosure hopefully.

  • NorthIslandAdventure

Court ordered sale of the home and assets, my ex wife thought she could just stay in the house and it was hers, the look on her face when the realtor put the for sale sign still brings me joy.

  • Then-Bug-2206

I would double check recording laws with the cameras  you may end up being labelled as controlling, stalking, etc by her  maybe try consulting a lawyer, if you try to manage things yourself you may get in more trouble, if you pack a bag of your stuff and leave for a few days you dont lose any right to a settlement or your stuff. The courts made this so people are not scared to leave these situations just because they might lose their stuff dont take anything valuable that is not obviously yours or it can be considered aggression. In some cases the cops will come help you get your stuff and that provides solid evidence as to the conditions left but you have to be able to prove you didnt go back after

If you get a domestic abuse charge it is going to be a lot more difficult and expensive than moving out now if at all possible. It maybe illegal to put cameras up or in certain places, itÔÇÖs a horrible situation- especially because if the story is how you say it is, itÔÇÖs why cops have domestic violence fatigue in real cases.

Best of luck but donÔÇÖt get yourself in more trouble trying to fix things. Before you leave take a video of every room and the stuff in it, lock the door and leave the key with your landlord so it canÔÇÖt be claimed you went back and took more if she lies or damages stuff defamation can be on the table. Have a video of the apartment straight to the key going in your landlords hands, donÔÇÖt edit or cut video. If you are lying and actually abusive that will come out too, the comments automatically assuming the female is lying are unhelpful. But based on the situation explained from your perspective leaving is best.

  • bricreative

Get a lawyer and force the sale

  • greenskies80

Have a smart watch and record all interactions in case she false accuses you again

  • 7thAbjectTestament

    > Both times they told me if I get the wrong cop I will not be so lucky.

Wow that is fucking enraging. Those police officers are just being honest, but it makes my blood boil that such wrongful enforcement can exist.

  • 1964elcamino

Also it is not illegal to bid on purchasing your own listing during the forced sale.

  • 1964elcamino

Body camera ,please start wearing one wile you are both home together .
Apply to the court for a forced sale .

  • Fallout4Addict

Record every time your in the same room together. She’s claiming abuse to get you removed from the property and she could hurt herself and say it was you. I’d consider putting cameras up when she’s not home in the communal areas and keep your phone on you at all times.

Speak to a lawyer about going to court to force the sale of the property. Do not leave the house until your lawyer says you can.

  • cdn-Commie

So.. you can always leave, and you should. There’s always excuses and things that will only keep you there. There are many options, some more unconfutable than others, but all better than a future Domestic charges regardless if you feel there are lies or not.

You need to take responsibility and move on with your life and get a lawyer involved for a forced sale of the condo. You do not to be in the condo during this process, if you have to live in your car, then that is what you do.

  • Cagel

SheÔÇÖs making multiple false accusations against you. You think you canÔÇÖt afford to move out. That may be true. But you definitely canÔÇÖt afford to stay and risk one of those accusations sticking.

Personally IÔÇÖd let the bank foreclose the property before IÔÇÖd risk being charged for domestic assault.

  • qwerty12e

    You need a lawyer.

  • evil_computer0101

You cant afford to move out? She is going to move you into jail. Nobody will care she is lying. Be safe.

  • CanadianBertRaccoon

    Record all interactions.

  • Opposite-Donut8630

Shoulda made better choices in life, fella

  • Anitmata

Have you considered a men’s shelter? Are any available in your area?

  • These-Sandwich7252

How good were things before they went south?

  • PriorExtension2827

Both move out. Rent it out, split the income after the bils are paid. Sell ot is a few years once it’s not a loss.

  • stonersrus19

While waiting for a court ordered sale you might be “sublet” your portion of the place. If there’s no laws prohibiting it. It will take her 30 days to get them out.

  • Muted_Pressure_6804

Put a camera in the house.
