Title: Experiencing Unfounded Debt Collection – AI Legalese Decoder to the Rescue
Introduction:
In recent times, I have found myself in an unexpected and perplexing situation. It appears that I owe a debt of $177 to 2degrees, a service provider I have never signed up for. Despite my efforts to resolve the matter by reporting it as potential fraud, my attempts have been met with silence and a lack of response. Engaging with a debt collection agency is something I am vehemently against, particularly since I have been actively disputing this alleged debt for nearly half a year. With financial constraints preventing me from seeking legal advice, I wonder if there are any viable solutions to address this predicament.
The Frustrating Journey:
Upon receiving emails notifying me about overdue payments from 2degrees, I instantly realized that these were not transactions I had engaged in. In May, I immediately contacted the company, clearly stating that I suspected fraudulent activity and urging them to investigate the matter. Unfortunately, apart from a generic auto-reply, no further response was received. Subsequent attempts to connect with them over the phone were equally unfruitful, as they requested personal details related to an account that I had never created. Exasperated, I persisted in my efforts to rectify the situation, writing back once more to emphasize that this was indeed a case of fraud and appeal for a thorough investigation. Nevertheless, my concerns fell on deaf ears.
The Intervening Debt Collection Agency:
To my dismay, a letter arrived, informing me that my case had been referred to a debt collection agency. Once again, I promptly responded, reasserting the fraudulent nature of the supposed debt and urging them to address the matter properly. However, despite my persistence, the agency recently sent me an email, demanding immediate payment of $177. This amount is particularly baffling given that the initial “bill” I received was a mere $22, highlighting the absurdity and inconsistency of the situation.

Email the debt collection agency and tell them you **dispute the debt**. They will then go back to 2Degrees and 2Degrees will have to prove you owe them the money and that it was you who signed up etc. Chances of that are low and they will most likely just write off the debt for that low amount rather that going to court.
Email 2degrees so you have all this in writing and tell them to prove it was you who signed up, don’t be rude or anything just tell them it wasnt you. Then ask them for all the information they have on you, so you can see all the proof which they are accusing you of.

“Dispute the debt” It’s the magic three words. Ask for copy of the orginal contract and invoice.
Remember all burden of proof is on their side, you don’t need to do anything more.
Don’t speak to debt collectors, only 2 degrees.
Someone stole my drivers licence from my mailbox and used it to get two new phones on a payment plan. I found out when applying for a new job after they ran a credit check and asked me to explain the debt.
I found out who the phone provider was (2degrees). I filed a police report and used that as documentation for the debt to be cleared since it was a cause of fraud
I had a letter from a private investigator stuck to my door a couple of years ago. I called him up and it was due to owning spark $1300. I had never been with spark and when I enquired with them they advised a phone plan had been started 18 months earlier. I had lost my wallet on a night out and whoever found it purchased a phone on a 24 month term – not sure which card they used but used my ID to open the phone plan. After 3 months of not paying the plan was disconnected and eventually sent to a debt collector. I went to the police and spark about this. I filed the report and police advised there was nothing further to do because it was spark that was defrauded not me. Not sure what ended up happening but I wasnÔÇÖt required to pay anything.
File a police report and let the credit agencies handle it. Don’t talk to the collection agency again apart from to say you dispute it. Get in touch separately with 2Deg to ask them for proof of your never having been a customer of theirs.
Did you miss place or lose any of your id at any time, 2degrees is really bad they do everything on line and donÔÇÖt do proper checks.
If its not yours, dont pay, dont recognize the debt.
Is it possible you are a customer of one of the companies that has been bought out by and merged into 2degrees in the last few years?
i.e. did you have your internet or phone provided by any of:
* Vocus
* Slingshot
* Snap
* MyRepublic
* Stuff Fibre
* Sky Broadband?
