## Problem with Car Service at Dealership

Greetings to all readers,

I have been facing a concerning issue with a car service provided by a dealership.

As an EU citizen with Swiss residency, I found myself in a situation where I had to navigate through the process of exporting car parts from Germany to Switzerland, which involved additional paperwork. The incident took place in Germany, where I followed the advice of a colleague to visit this particular car service. This service was my only option to have my car serviced before heading out for a vacation.

About a month ago, I took my car in for a routine service, expecting it to be a quick procedure lasting no more than three hours. However, the dealership informed me that my battery needed replacement due to its age of six years. Although I had requested a test on the battery as a precaution for the upcoming winter season, the service ended up taking an unexpected turn. After replacing the battery, my 2017 SUV refused to start. The dealership spent three days attempting to diagnose the issue and eventually concluded that the car’s engine computer needed to be replaced, with a hefty price tag of around 2500 Euros. I contested this charge as my car had been functioning without any issues prior to the service and had been driven extensively without any problems. Moreover, the car had been parked in a garage for a month without any issues arising. I only settled the invoice for the service itself, yet the dealership began charging me parking fees for each day my car remained with them. Surprisingly, the dashboard of the car did not show any error messages prior to the service. I had personally driven the car to the dealership, and they had moved it from the customer parking area to the garage without notifying me of any pre-existing issues. The discovery of errors displayed on the car’s HUD and navigation system upon returning to retrieve the car raised my suspicions. However, the dealership claimed to lack surveillance cameras in their service area, making it challenging to gather evidence.

After engaging in email exchanges with the dealership and the car manufacturer’s representative in Germany, the communication abruptly ceased, leaving me in a state of distress. The investigation conducted by the manufacturer’s representative progressed slowly, escalating the issue further. As a family with two young children residing outside the city, the absence of a vehicle for over a month has posed significant challenges for us.

Amidst the uncertainties surrounding the dealership’s actions, I am exploring legal avenues to address the situation promptly. I am keen to seek guidance on the necessary steps to take in this scenario.

I have received varied advice from acquaintances, ranging from reporting the matter to the police under fraud allegations to awaiting the outcome of the manufacturer’s investigation, despite doubts raised about the dealership’s credibility. Some have suggested seeking a technical evaluation from another car service provider like ADAC to substantiate suspicions of misconduct.

While external factors such as vacations, illnesses, and work commitments have hindered my ability to address this issue sooner, I am determined to resolve it promptly this week. I welcome any insights, experiences, or advice from individuals who have encountered similar challenges.

Thank you for your support and contributions to this discussion.

Get the car towed to an independent garage and ask them to check the ecu. It used to be a scam that they would put a faulty one in or disconnect something. Charge you about then plug the original back in.

You can also ask them for a fault report which could be used as evidence in any claim against the garage.
