University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business Ranked No. 7 for Entrepreneurship

The University of UtahÔÇÖs David Eccles School of Business has once again been recognized as a top program for entrepreneurship. In the latest rankings released by U.S. News & World Report, the undergraduate program for entrepreneurship at the school has been ranked No. 7 overall and No. 4 among public schools for 2024.

The success of the entrepreneurship program at the Eccles School is the result of a partnership between the Department of Entrepreneurship & Strategy and the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute. These programs together offer a wide range of opportunities for students, including grants, workshops, elective courses, a unique graduate program, and a living-learning community.

The importance of entrepreneurship education is emphasized by Rachel Hayes, the dean of the David Eccles School of Business, who says, ÔÇ£Our tradition for entrepreneurship continues to be recognized in our top-10 ranking. At the Eccles School, we welcome students from across campus to learn about entrepreneurship inside and outside the classroom. We have something for every student to learn the values of entrepreneurship, including what it means to innovate and persevere through any challenge.ÔÇØ

In addition to the undergraduate program, the Eccles School’s MBA program has also received recognition. It has been ranked No. 12 for entrepreneurship overall (No. 5 among public schools) for 2024.

One of the most recent additions is Lassonde+X, a three-class program designed for students of any major, adding an entrepreneurial mindset to their field of study and future career path.

An innovative program launched by the Eccles School is the Master of Business Creation program, which began in 2019. This program offers scholarships to founders for launching and scaling their companies. Students in the program receive extensive mentoring, coursework, grants, and other resources. Starting from January 2023, founders will also have the option to enroll in the MBC Online program.

Jennifer Brown, the chair of the Department of Entrepreneurship & Strategy at the Eccles School, proudly states, ÔÇ£We are proud to have one of the largest entrepreneurship departments and as great a number of opportunities as any university. We offer students many ways to learn about entrepreneurship, including the opportunity to see entrepreneurship in action. Many students start in our introductory entrepreneurship classes, then they progress to a minor, major or masterÔÇÖs.ÔÇØ

Outside the classroom, the Eccles School offers various options for students to experience entrepreneurship through the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute. This includes workshops, mentoring, startup support, grants, meetups, and more. Students can also live and create in Lassonde Studios, a renowned five-story building with an innovation space on the first floor and dorm space on the upper levels. Lassonde Studios has been featured in The New York Times and Architectural Digest, drawing attention from around the world.

The Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute recently introduced the Lassonde Founders program, which is a residential entrepreneur community for incoming students who are actively involved in entrepreneurship. Students accepted into this program receive scholarships and have the opportunity to live and launch their ventures alongside a remarkable group of young entrepreneurs. All incoming students are encouraged to join this program.

Troy DÔÇÖAmbrosio, the executive director of the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute and an assistant dean at the Eccles School, emphasizes the hands-on nature of entrepreneurship at the University of Utah, saying, ÔÇ£Entrepreneurship is not just something students do in the classroom at the University of Utah. Students can take the lessons they learn in class and work with us to prototype their idea, build a team, and launch a thriving business.ÔÇØ

For alumni of the Eccles School, the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute has introduced the Lassonde for Life program. This program allows all University of Utah alumni, regardless of their major or college, to participate in various activities and events aimed at exploring entrepreneurship and developing their product ideas or businesses.

The U.S. News rankings are determined by the judgments of deans and senior faculty members at peer institutions. This year, they surveyed deans and senior faculty members at all 523 undergraduate business programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

The U.S. News graduate business school rankings were determined by surveying all 496 MBA programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
