Three Kinesiology Students Honored at NEACSM Fall Conference

Kinesiology students Luke Arieta, Nehemiah Wilson and Kaitlyn Kleeman were recognized for their outstanding achievements at the annual New England chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (NEACSM) Fall Conference, which took place on October 12-13 in Springfield. The event showcased the exceptional research and presentations conducted by these three students within their respective areas of focus.

Luke Arieta, a doctoral student working in the Muscle Physiology Laboratory under the guidance of Distinguished Professor Jane Kent, was honored with the prestigious President’s Cup for delivering the best research poster presentation at the conference. Additionally, he was awarded a $1,000 travel grant to attend the 2024 American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) annual meeting in Boston, where he will represent the New England chapter and compete against other regional PresidentÔÇÖs Cup winners.

Nehemiah Wilson, a masterÔÇÖs student working in the Pediatric Physical Activity Lab under the supervision of professor Sofiya Alhassan, received the Student Investigator Masters Award for presenting the best masterÔÇÖs level student research at the conference.

Kaitlyn Kleeman, an undergraduate working in the NeuroMuscular Biomechanics Laboratory under the guidance of assistant professor Sarah Roelker, was recognized with the Student Investigator Undergraduate Award for delivering the best undergraduate student presentation at the event. Both masterÔÇÖs and undergraduate investigator awards came with a $500 prize.

The exceptional accomplishments of these students further emphasize the quality of the kinesiology program at the university. Richard van Emmerik, professor and chair of the kinesiology department, highlighted the program’s strength and expressed his satisfaction with the performance of the undergraduates at the Academic College Bowl.
