Heading: Seeking Investment Advice to Utilize Excess Cash in Current Position

Introduction:
Greetings everyone! I am in need of some guidance regarding the utilization of my excess cash, considering my current financial situation. I would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions you can provide.

Background:
To provide some context, I am in my early 20s and work in the tech industry, earning a salary of $100k or more. At present, I find myself with approximately $50k in excess cash that I am looking to invest. Currently, this surplus amount is parked in a savings account, which offers an interest rate of 4.6%. While this ensures stability, I believe there is a more profitable option available.

Investment Dilemma:
However, I am uncertain about the optimal allocation of my excess funds. I have already invested quite significantly in direct equities in the USA, as well as in the S&P500. Now, I am at a crossroads where I must decide whether to increase my investments in balanced funds with a long-term (7-10 years) perspective towards purchasing a house or adopt a more aggressive approach by channeling additional funds into direct equities and ETFs. Struggling to choose between the two, I am turning to you for your valuable insights and advice.

Additional Details:
It is important to note that I am consistently investing in the S&P500 every paycheck. Hence, I am specifically seeking suggestions on what to do with my excess funds, considering my current financial standing.

The time to invest is when everyone else is trying to reduce their debt.

    IÔÇÖve got two suggestions:
    – make regular contributions to a growth or aggressive fund (350-450/week)
    – invest in yourself (youÔÇÖre in your 20s)

HereÔÇÖs some ideas for investing in yourself:

    – exercise (gym, swim, clubs)
    – therapy (sort out your issues)
    – go to the dentist
    – travel
    – grow your career (you earn 6 figures, in 10-20 years you could earn 7)

Nobody else has suggested it but why not a term PIE. YouÔÇÖd get about 6-6.3% guaranteed return.

It’s weird how this sort of real post doesn’t get traction in this sub.

If I was in your position I would DCA over a year into something pretty aggressive.

You’re young, high income and probably on an upward income trajectory. All of this means high income tax. And you already have a lot of foreign stocks from the sounds of things. As such, have you thought about buying some NZ and FIF exempt AUS stocks to reduce your FIF tax exposure?

An extremely exciting investment opportunity crossed my desk today. Aerotyne International is a cutting-edge tech firm out of the Midwest, awaiting imminent patent approval on a new generation of radar equipment.

Excess cash you say? Step into my office.

When I was in my mid-20s, working for an investment bank IT in a low tax jurisdiction, when the iPhone came out, it seemed “obvious” that it’s about to change the world. (Funny story, I then joined a competitor which it completely destroyed after that stint with investment banks).

My thinking now – I was young then, with ~100k in savings account, saving 5k a month, frugal despite family obligations… I should’ve gone all in.

I know it’s frowned upon on this sub, but find your Apple now (the answer is actually obvious) and go all in. What’s that Buffet quote about having it in one basket is ok as long as you watch that basket carefully? I think it’s less risky that using leverage to invest (which some study found to be a successful strategy for people in your life stage).

In my calculations, I would’ve been FI a decade ago if I trusted my gut about Apple. Hindsight is 20/20, fuck me.

Started investing heavily in QQQ at the start of the year, which played out well. Seems frothy at the moment tho.

I just sold off all my equities. Next 6-12 months will be bumpy as the real recession kicks in and I doubt I can beat the savings rate, or beat the interest savings from using the cash to offset my mortgage when it refixes later this year.

Obviously I can’t predict the future, but I managed to avoid the last big dip so I’m going with my informed intuition here.

Sounds like you have a lot of exposure already to the international sharemarket. Maybe time to look at diversifying your investments. Property? Business?

Talk to an accountant re your tax exposure/liabilities. Follow this up with a discussion with a trusted financial advisor or 2.

What’s your career path? Is there opportunity to invest in the business you’re employed in? Can you extend your IT skills into a business?

    All conversations worth having.
