Title: Seeking Advice on Disability Benefits for Chronic Pain Conditions: Fibromyalgia, Hypermobile Joints, Small Fiber Neuropathy, and POTS

Introduction:
Dear community members, I am reaching out for guidance and insights from those who have successfully obtained disability benefits for chronic pain conditions. As a 34-year-old female, I have been diagnosed with three chronic pain conditions – Fibromyalgia, hypermobile joints, and small fiber neuropathy – in addition to Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). However, my attorney has expressed concerns about claiming POTS as a disability, emphasizing the lack of recent fainting incidents. Given these uncertainties, I am apprehensive about the strength of my case.

Expanding on the Chronic Pain Conditions:
My journey has been particularly challenging due to the coexistence of Fibromyalgia, hypermobile joints, and small fiber neuropathy. Unfortunately, my attorney has conveyed concerns about using POTS as a basis for disability. just general advice not specific to your issue. Be able to clearly and concisely explain how your conditions not only affect your ability to work but how they impact your daily life. Each of us is different and how we deal with our issues can differ drastically. Look at Stephen Hawkins I dare say his disabilities were far worse then yours and mine and most who receive disability. Yet he worked and influenced the World. But all of us aren’t a Hawkins and the system doesnt require us to be(fortunatly)but being able to clearly explain how your issues impact your daily life can go a long way to making a convincing argument.

It helps if chronic pain is evident in the medical evidence, that is tied to specific diagnoses

ItÔÇÖs all about the medical evidence and you being able to articulate how the pain affects your daily life and ability to work. IÔÇÖm on my fourth hearing (second appeal/remand) and itÔÇÖs mostly because I filed young (at 35). I have hEDS and similar chronic pain situations plus severe arthritis in my knee and moderate in my back. Best of luck – I really hope you can yet it. If you donÔÇÖt, appeal!!

Here’s some good advice. The conditions you mention are tricky to get approved for. Your chances really vary depending on how strong your case file is.

    Good luck!

As a member involved in the autism community where the trifecta (EDS, POTS, and MCAS) are very very prevalent – none of my friends with these have been approved for SSDI or SSI.

There are many resources on the internet to help you prepare for your hearing. YouTube has some good videos,

You can find sample outlines of areas of questioning. Bear in mind it’s your burden to prove that you cannot perform work. So describing in detail the activities of daily living that you cannot do, and how your limitations are the result of your medical conditions, is crucial. If you have a prior work history, be prepared to explain why you cannot perform the actual tasks involved. For example, if you were a secretary, you could explain how answering the phone, writing memos, typing, computer, etc can no longer be performed due to your conditions. And you need to state exactly why. Oftentimes explaining the side effects of medication, which can include confusion and fatigue in the case of pain medications, for example, can be helpful.
