I canÔÇÖt answer your question. But IÔÇÖll tell you this: A married couple without kids earning $180k will be in a whole class above a married couple with two kids making $200k.

  • PopcornSurgeon

    ThatÔÇÖs not how that works.

Are they educated? Do they have powerful social networks? Do they have multigenerational wealth? What are their assets?

  • [deleted]

Net worth is the true measure is socioeconomic class.

Most of us are working class because we work to earn a living. I think the defining characteristic of the wealthy class is they donÔÇÖt have to earn a living through working.

  • DrHydrate

I don’t know what you mean by class, here, OP. By other comments, I think you mean something like, who will have more disposable income.

I’m gonna guess it’s the single person. In US, the single person will have higher taxes than the couple, assuming the couple is married (single person pays about $1000 more annually, just looking at federal taxes) but the single person will have lower expenses (e.g. they will eat less, buy fewer toiletries).

  • [deleted]

They are the same class anything from 90 to 300 would be the same IÔÇÖd say DINK or not

  • CaliforniaGiraffe

IÔÇÖm in a two earner household taking in $250k plus kids, and I can tell you itÔÇÖs the single earner.

  • moneymoneymoney_

The $180k couple pays less in taxes, so they will have more power, especially if they keep their expenses low.

  • lucky_719

Not enough info to answer the question. Do they have kids? Is the single earned supporting someone else?

  • frolickingdepression

Both would be considered upper class in the US, even in a HCOL area like San Francisco.

    https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/07/23/are-you-in-the-american-middle-class/

  • threesixtyone

Need more context than this. It really comes down to expenses and lifestyle. Cost of living like housing and childcare makes a huge difference. 150 or 200k USD in an expensive place like SF Bay Area, London, Hong Kong or Sydney doesnÔÇÖt actually go very far if you have kids bc so much of your salary goes to living expenses. This is even more true if you donÔÇÖt have immediate family in the area to help out with free babysitting or shared meals and clothing/toys.

  • [deleted]

Class is too broad a term if it isnt defined. It also depends if there are income splitting benefits between the two. All in the net costs will be more effectively split between the couple vs the single person. Will it be 30k plus in benefit likely but hard to say 100%.

  • 1ksassa

And how exactly is this important?

  • Comprehensive_Cow527

Culturally depends – is the single earner a single human living alone, or with dependents? If they have a spouse and kids, they are socioeconomically considered more adjusted and well off in western cultures.
If they’re a single parent or single human with no dependents/only parental dependents, they are less.

Two income earners depends again on kids and dependents, also what the roles are. Is one in high end economic work and the other taking up part time work for fun? They would be ranked higher. If they have lots of kids and NEED two income, they are less.

When dealing with culture – time management and free time are major signs of high socioeconomic status. Money isn’t everything.

  • bbrackett

I think another part for the future is jointly the couple will most likely going to receive more in SS than the single as well by a pretty big chunk.

  • cadien17

It would help to know the purpose of the question. Especially since it would help clarify what you mean by class.

  • mike1097

I donÔÇÖt have time to stop and rank. Both seem doing well. Whats 30k at that level?

I would rate near even as both groups are one household.

  • Joy2b

Can you tell us what youÔÇÖre actually trying to answer?

TheyÔÇÖre more or less identical, but each would be better or worse at handling certain situations.

Two people are often better at handling an adverse event, like a heart attack followed by a few months of unemployed rehabilitation.

If someone earning 150 marries someone earning 30, they might gain a partner who coupons, makes bag lunches, buys gently used things instead of new. The new partner might be used to postponing all their wants and needs for times when things are good. ItÔÇÖs very possible that one or the other hasnÔÇÖt worked through a personal finance book in years.

Many people who marry improve at financial goals (like retirement savings and buying real estate) just because theyÔÇÖre talking about them more with someone they trust.

ItÔÇÖs a really good idea for a couple (especially a couple with two very different incomes) to pick up a personal finance class or couples finance book to study together when opening shared accounts. Many do, many donÔÇÖt, and their financial outcomes are very different.

  • Explanation-Thick

Depends on the cost of living. IÔÇÖve heard that living expenses are roughly 1.6 times for DINK married couples what they are for single earners. Assuming thatÔÇÖs correct, if COL is around 80k for a single person, it would be 120k for a couple. The gap in free money is mostly made up for in tax savings. Even though there are now two people to spend this remaining money, there is also double the amount of tax-sheltered investment opportunities.

For this case I would say it is a wash. Increase the two-earner to 200k with no kids and it swings in their favor. In general, marrying someone with a similar income is almost certainly going to improve your class standing. When the amounts are more imbalanced, the calculus shifts.
