South Australian business owners are facing significant challenges as they grapple with rising power prices. As customers stretch out their visits, salon owners like Paglia struggle to generate sufficient revenue. The financial strain is immense as expenses continue to rise, and passing them on to customers becomes inevitable to sustain the business.

SA Households Paying More, Report Indicates

A report by the Essential Services Commission of South Australia reveals that power bills for small businesses across the state have soared by up to 16.5 per cent in the 12 months ending June. This increase translates to nearly $650. Furthermore, the average household in South Australia is paying up to $250 more for electricity. These escalating prices disproportionately affect low-income households, according to Ross Womersley, CEO of the South Australian Council of Social Service.

Womersley highlights the hardships faced by low-income families, who often make sacrifices like reducing food consumption to afford their energy bills. Despite the South Australian government’s introduction of rebates of up to $500 for eligible households on concession payments, major energy retailers reacted swiftly by increasing their prices. This eroded the advantage and protection that these payments were meant to provide. Womersley emphasizes the urgency of addressing energy demand and ensuring that low-income households have access to solar and insulation to alleviate escalating energy costs.
