Yes, you put in for 10 days unpaid leave with work, and centrelink pay you instead.
Just make sure you have a cash buffer, my experience last time is while I did get the 10 days pay, it took a while to come through.
Took the dad and partners pay when both of my kids were born. Had to be taken as a block of two weeks and in the first 12 months. From memory it was around $700-800 per week and while it was less than what I was earning it was great to get the time at home without cutting into other leave entitlements.
It looks like it could be increased next year for your second kid to 8 weeks.
Yeah. 2 weeks unpaid leave. I used it during covid. Fairly simple process but unless you have *all* of your ducks in a row, you might be waiting a while to get paid.
If this is your first child wait till she comes home from hospital that’s when she will need you most.

You do not need to take unpaid leave any more as long as not working. So could be any form of leave or unpaid up to you.

Yeah, it was good. You’ve got 12 months to the day to use it (I used it a Xmas time)
It was a pain in the arse filling in the million forms (ok, it wasn’t that many, still a pain)

Anyone know if you can take this in addition to paid parental leave from work? I.e. take your workplace entitlement paid. Then take unpaid leave and claim from Centrelink?
I did when my son was born but I was earning not much more than minimum wage already so basically a non issue. Wouldn’t take it now though even though I can for another few months.
Claimed it at the same time as claiming leave from work. Was a pain in the ass to sort out leave without pay through work so ignored that part and out the claim in anyway.
Claim it. DonÔÇÖt take unpaid leave, take annual leave. TheyÔÇÖll never know ƒñö
I would just add to the other comments… You don’t have to take UNPAID leave from your employer. I believe the Services Australia payment is irrelevant of paid/unpaid leave. E.g. you could take Paid Rec from your employer + 2 weeks Paid Parental leave from Services Australia.
Alas Dad leave is not available to women FFS. I can’t wait until they rename it as Parental Leave.
You can get a month of leave now re apply
Centrelink will pay you through your employer for any period of time you claim (they pay your company and then they pay you) you tell Centrelink the dates you want to claim through the services Australia app.
If your baby is/will be born after 1 July 2023 the entitlement changed but the application process/way it is paid is the same. The services Australia website explains the process and entitlements pretty well.
Yeah, you have to take unpaid pay I think, they don’t want double dipping. Centrelink are a lot more chill about it cause it’s like 1000 bucks compared to full pensions and shit

Get your work to claim the money and ask them if they will top up to match your normal wage.
Yep, but it’s not much $$ most likely a fair bit less than what your earn.
Take as much time off as you can though, you won’t get it back
