Square and CashApp Payment Platforms Experience Outages
Since Thursday, Square and CashApp, two popular payment platforms utilized by numerous small businesses, have been encountering outages. This has caused users to face difficulties in accessing their accounts and performing transactions on both platforms.
Block Inc.
Block Inc. (formerly Square Inc.), a technology company founded by Jack Dorsey in 2009, is the parent company of both Square and CashApp. With its headquarters in San Francisco, Block Inc. launched CashApp in 2013.
Resolution of Outages
The outages persisted until Friday morning but were eventually resolved, according to the company. Both CashApp and Square provided updates on their websites regarding the disruptions that impacted thousands of customers. These issues prevented users from accessing their accounts, making payments, and viewing transaction history. CashApp mentioned that, as of Friday afternoon, the situation is mostly resolved, but they will continue investigating.
“We’ve resolved a majority of the issues, but you may experience some delays,” stated CashApp on Friday. “Our team continues to monitor the situation.”
Square confirmed that all systems were back to normal on Friday.
Difficulties Faced by Small Businesses
However, during the outages, numerous small businesses encountered difficulties in their operations due to the glitches.
Aaron Bergh, the owner of Calwise Spirits Co. in Paso Robles, CA, highlighted his challenges in processing credit card payments during this period. He resorted to jotting down credit card details for later processing or accepting cash, resulting in limited customer spending. In previous Square outages, he could at least record credit card information, but this time, he couldn’t even access his account.
“We’re taking a huge risk by letting product walk out the door with the possibility that their card may be declined when we try to process them,” Bergh conveyed to The San Francisco Chronicle.
