I mean, do you not keep up with what is going on in your industry… bloated tech salaires have been down for ages.
It’s likely industry dependent. Tech has hit well publicised downturn as of late and so it’s entirely reasonable for there to be significant budget pressures.
Anecdotally, consulting & lobbying is still an all you can eat buffet.
Wage stagnation isn’t new. Probably 10 years ago I was talking to my accountant and he asked what was going on with tech as I and many other clients of his had salaries which had not changed in years.
The good rates seem to be in govt defense contracts at the moment but you need nv1/2 and need to be in Canberra. If I was contracting I’d get between 650-850 a day which is pretty much the same as I was getting in 2015-2018.
The company I work for charges me out at 1500 a day which as far as I know hasn’t changed in years.
There was a bit of a bump in 2021 but from what I’ve seen lately the rates have dropped back to what was generally offered in 2018-2019
Yeh – I work in tech and this year my salary has gone backwards to get into the same roles that were paying way more in 2019, 2020, and 2021. It’s like a 30-40% cut for me. Totally sucks.
Im not an independent contractor but I do work on a casual basis (relief teacher). Although my wage has risen substantially since I started 10 years ago ($270 per day to now $460 per day). But when you donÔÇÖt have guarantees with work itÔÇÖs important to live well within your means and never assume anything. Interest rates and health problems/medical bills mean my disposable income currently is less than it was when I was an 18 year old uni student.
Accept that the hay day of IT contracting during the last 10 years is over.
For the last 10 years: Zero interest rate -> Endless capex -> Endless contract extensions. However, the reverse has been happening since last year. The EOFY just now hit hard. Suddenly all contractors were flushing the market and driving the daily rates down.
The immigration tap for ‘professionals’ is wide open, so I’d expect it will get worse.
Very dependent on your role, the scale of project work, and maturity of the organisation needing your services.
I am still running programs and portfolios with large scale projects, paying anywhere between $1200-$1500/day for technical resources (anywhere from Infra/Cloud, SAP, and solution specific SMEs). My recruiter has told me that there is now a huge supply of IT workers and also places are cancelling projects left right and centre.

PMs and BAs – many applicants day rate has gone to pre covid levels. During covid rates were significantly higher.
Have a few friends looking around right now. There are still a few places dishing out 1.1k – 1.2k a day. ItÔÇÖs more common to see 900-1k right now. So 800 is quite low and below market. Either your tech stack is not in demand or youÔÇÖre not interviewing well or donÔÇÖt have any good recruiters in your network. Maybe all 3.
A lot of contractors converted back to PAYG perms. 6 months ago there were almost zero contract roles available. Now theyÔÇÖre seeing it semi recover. Decent perm seniors are offered 220-240k TC. Not bad, not great.
Overall tech has been hit hard. Lots of juniors canÔÇÖt find roles, contract seniors had to convert to perm, an influx of people from a certain country has flooded the market, lots of layoffs, and projects are getting shut down.
Not sure how long this will last. Some friends still holding onto 1.4k – 1.5k rolling contracts and theyÔÇÖre doing okay. Others, not so lucky.
I have been hovering around 800 to 900 in the last 6 years. To earn above that, I need to step up to a PM kind of role. I don’t think I have the skill set to manage a massive project and not planning to pretend that I can only for it to fail. Industry is small and bad delivery will be known sooner or later. So yeah pay has been stagnant but that is probably because i dont have the skill set required to get more lol
but my ex basses who ended up setting up their own shop did say demand for daily rate contractors has decreased quite significantly

Tech is only going to get worse with the improvements/advancement of AI. The real money in the future will be made on tools doing manual work that the robots canÔÇÖt do.
That doesn’t make sense. I’m relatively new to IT (cyber, without doxxing myself).
My pay has gone from $65K (intern) -> $80K -> $110K in about 3 years. Excluding Super.

I don’t have nearly the # of certifications as your mate but I’m on track to be earning ~$150,000 very soon.
Are they being really picky with who they want to work with?
It has capped out a bit, I’d agree – I’m in program and project management and the various things that surround that in IT and I’ve found that wage increases have slowed quite a bit, especially as things ease up a bit with regards to unemployment and general amounts of $ being spent on new project work around the place.
