It is not just as simple as “changing names” at the bank.
Who is the executor? That person (if it is you) will need to do all the things necessary to exercise the will. I would suggest getting guidance from a solicitor, even if it is just an initial consultation to get the ball rolling. As there is a mortgage involved, it is a little bit more complicated then just changing your name at titles as well.
ETA: You do not need to use the solicitor that holds the will (if you are the executor). The executor can choose who they wish to assist them.
You can, as executor, do it all yourself.
You can, as executor, pay solicitors to do all of it.
You can, pay solicitors to give you some clues, and do the legwork yourself.
Which of those you choose depends on how confident your google-fu is, and how much money is involved in the estate and how complex it is, and how much spare time you have.
Start by googling “duties of an executor”, and if your eyes glaze over, go see a solicitor and get some good advice. Decide between you which bits you’d do yourself, and which bits you want to pay an expert for.
The fees are paid to the Supreme Court for filing, the solicitors will do the work required to submit to the court to grant probate.
The executor follows the direction of the will, the solicitor arranges the transfer of property and letters of administration so you can distribute the assets etc.
The solicitor is a good bet to cross the T’s and dot the is of probate. Then you can arrange to transfer the assets into your name. Use a solicitor if it is too hard
You can apply for probate yourself. No, you do not need to use a solicitor to execute a will. Just call every asset holder yourself and ask for their process, given the delicate nature, they’re more than happy to help.

Sorry for your loss. I have just gone through what you have described. I used a Solisiter to do the probate but then did everything thing else myself as I was blown away by how much they wanted to charge, for basically filling in forms. Good luck

If you are named as the executor then you can definitely do it all yourself if you want to. You can do things like applying for probate yourself. It might be a bit frustrating and time consuming but it is doable.
My parents did all the process (probate, change of owner for investments etc) for their parents with no legal assistance. They have no legal background but theyÔÇÖre very good at attention to detail, organisation and having the patience to go through the process. If that sounds like you then you should be OK. And if you start doing it yourself and find it difficult, you can get legal help then at that stage.
