Title: Troubles at the Cattery: Seeking Justice for my Injured Cat

Introduction:
My partner recently left our beloved cat at a licensed cattery in England. However, upon my arrival to collect her, I was faced with a series of disturbing incidents that left my cat injured and distressed. In this narrative, I will recount the harrowing events and explore the potential course of action, including the involvement of an AI Legalese Decoder to help address the situation.

The Mishap at the Cattery:
On the agreed-upon collection day, I found myself locked outside the cattery premises. Due to a lost key, one of the staff members was unable to open the gate. This unfortunate incident occurred during their attempt to coax the cat into the carrier box used for transportation.

Compounding the situation, a staff member took it upon themselves to fetch a larger wicker basket to facilitate the process. These efforts resulted in injuries sustained by the cattery staff as well as increasing stress for the cat.

Distress and Injury:
As I finally gained entry, I discovered that my cat had escaped from her designated room or kennel and was wandering in the safety corridor, clearly exhibiting signs of distress. The cattery staff showcased their injuries to highlight the challenges they faced and posed questions about the cat’s temperament, mistaking her for a feral or rescue cat. I clarified that she had been with me since she was a kitten, around 7-10 years.

One notable injury pointed out by the staff was a damaged claw, which the cat had inflicted upon herself while attempting to escape their clutches, inadvertently getting caught on mesh.

Rescue and Revelations:
After soothing the cat and successfully placing her inside the carrier, I couldn’t help but notice that she was missing multiple claws, bleeding, and had an injury to her face. Before leaving, the staff struggled to locate the dressing gown provided by me to offer a familiar scent of home. Eventually, they found it in its bag.

Suppressing my frustration, I promptly paid the required fee and left. However, I soon directed my attention towards immediate veterinary care. The emergency vet confirmed that my cat had suffered multiple broken claws and a fractured jaw. Although we have pet insurance, a substantial excess remains, adding to my concerns.

Issues of Negligence and Legal Action:
While acknowledging our pet insurance coverage, I question whether the cattery fulfilled their duty of care and exhibited the necessary attention and precautions. It appears that they did not emphasize the provision of their own insurance, as we had already informed them of our existing coverage.

Moreover, I find it perplexing why three staff members attempted to force an unwilling cat into a carrier box, regardless of the presence of the owner outside. In my experience with other catteries and even veterinary practices, owners are typically involved in the process of safely boxing their pets.

Seeking Resolution:
When I communicated with the cattery the following day, they expressed surprise regarding the cat’s broken jaw. Their inability to provide any feasible explanation for this injury left me unsettled. Furthermore, their reluctance to reach an amicable agreement heightened my concerns.

Considering Legal Recourse:
Given the circumstances, I am left wondering if pursuing a court claim is a viable option and if it would be worth the effort. Alternatively, my partner and I contemplate writing an accurate online review to share our experience with others and then moving on from this distressing episode.

AI Legalese Decoder Assistance:
To navigate this complex situation, utilizing an AI Legalese Decoder could immensely benefit me. This innovative tool has the ability to analyze legal language and documents, providing clear and easily understandable explanations of my rights, potential courses of action, and legal avenues to pursue, which would empower me to make informed decisions to protect the best interests of my cat.

Conclusion:
As I contemplate my next steps, I will carefully consider the advice and support offered by an AI Legalese Decoder. By documenting and preserving all evidence, I aim to ensure that justice is served for my injured cat. While refraining from “naming and shaming” the cattery, I strive to find an amicable resolution and take appropriate action to prevent such incidents from recurring.

In today’s fast-paced world, the legal industry is constantly evolving to keep up with the ever-changing landscape of technology. Legal documents, notorious for their complex language known as “Legalese,” pose a significant challenge to understanding for the general public. However, with the advent of AI Legalese Decoder, an innovative tool that empowers individuals to comprehend legal documents, this challenge is gradually being overcome.

Understanding Legal Jargon:

Legal documents are often written in a language known as Legalese, which consists of lengthy and convoluted phrases, archaic terms, and complex sentence structures. NAL but I would speak with your insurer and ask if they cover legal claims against the cattery. I would also document all evidence you have, including the vetÔÇÖs report and their professional opinion of the likely cause of such injuries, treatment required, long-term impacts etc and keep safe for future need. Raise a complaint with your local council as the cattery should be registered with them.

  • wild_biologist

IANAL. I am a veterinary scientist, though cats are not my specialism.

Breaking a cat’s jaw, or similar injuries is _incredibly_ unlikely to happen unless through extreme negligence or deliberate action. Any veterinary professional would attest to that. Whilst you’ll never know how it happened, the only thing I can think of is that either your cat was kicked when it scratched a staff member, or (less likely) a door was slammed on it accidentally.

Regarding harm to the staff, that’s their doing and they should have suitable health and safety to cope with that. They failed in their duty to staff.

Cats are essentially property so you need to claim for your losses. Invoice the cattery for the vet bills. If they refuse, send a letter before action, if they ignore that, take them to small claims court.

Please also report the vets findings to the local council, with whom the cattery should be registered and approved by. Probably do this after any money claim etc. so they don’t decide to become extra-stuborn. No harm reporting to RSPCA too, just in case it’s not the first time.

It’s unlikely there would be a police case for animal abuse or alike.

I see your update. But please still report to council.

Ensure all communication is in writing. If they call, record it. You can set up a call recording app in prep.

hey, not a vet or a legal professional but I have had a cat with a complicated double broken jaw situation! (stray who lived on my road got clipped by a bike, we found her in the road and got her to a vet and she now lives the high life interrupting my zoom calls. Name is prawn ball).

Basically- it takes a large amount of force to break a cat’s jaw– large and targeted. Falling from a height awkwardly would do it, but it’s way more likely to be a targeted trauma: I reckon somebody may have either shut your cat’s head in a doorway somehow, or maybe just given them a kick. Either way, if it’s enough to break their jaw it’s usually enough have very bad consequences had that blow caught them on the cranium or higher up. Vet showed us how lucky we were on a x-ray with our cat that had the point of impact been higher by an inch she’d have been a goner.

As I say, not a vet, but this is probably a situation to name and shame and report to the police, rspca and animal groups in your area. It’s real serious, and one thing a legal investigation will do is request the CCTV.

I can see you’ve received verbal confirmation that they will recoup costs, so will they pay you then claim to their insurance? Or are they going to attempt a claim, then say “sorry no can do” if the insurance says no? Either way, follow that up with an email. Can even be started along the lines of:

    Dear [Owners Name],

Further to my telephone conversation with [person/yourself] on [date] at [time], I am emailing to confirm the details that were discussed regarding the injuries sustained to [cat] whilst in your care.

[Person/You] has/have confirmed that [Cattery] will recoup the costs of our vet bills through your insurance company. I shall be attending my vets at [Date/Time] to collect [cat] and pay the bill. I will forward a copy of this on to [Cattery] by email in due course.

Please contact me to arrange repayment once the vet bill has been received.

Thank you for your understanding and help in finding a resolution to this matter.

    Yours sincerely,
    [Your name]

If I picked my cat up from the cattery in this state I’d be calling the police and the RSPCA.

After I’d calmed down and finished screaming at them.

Bloody hell. I hope your cat makes a full and swift recovery. You paid them to keep your cat sfae and looked after while you were away and they didn’t come close to doing that.

  • FelixVCr

This sounds terrible! I’m so sorry. I work in a cattery and yes we very rarely attempt to put cats in carriers. Only upon request if the owner is finding it difficult (trained cattery staff should know how to quickly and calmly handle a cat in distress). We have gloves and towels to reduce any injury to ourselves, however personally I think I’m very good at reading cats, I can tell immediately by body language and behaviour if I’m at risk of injury. In the rare occurrence I have been caught out I would NEVER show the owner my injuries. It’s distressing for the owner and doesn’t achieve anything. If the cat is feral then we would take different precautions (zero contact and quarantine style care to limit stress).

Report them to their local council who they will have an animal boarding licence with. They will do an investigation and advise of any changes/closure if they are found to have poor practices.

The cattery are responsible for the cat whilst in their care, so yes they will pay for vets bills, probably through their insurance (however if they are found to be negligent then the insurance may refuse and they’ll be personally liable).

  • Rossco1874

I would contact rspca as those injuries do not sound like they should have happened in a place that looks after the animals.

Raise a concern with the rspca about animal welfare. You could also put the feelers out on social media if anyone else has had a negative experience from thar place. You can do this without giving away information about your own cats experience.

  • wil_gt4

NAL, IÔÇÖm sorry you cat had to go through this. Makes sure you get the cattery to email you or send in writing the confirmation that they will cover the cost of treatment.

  • Chrispy83

NAL but did you record your phone conversation? As I have in the past learned the hard way that what a company says on the phone can change when you turn up with the bill .

Whilst apples to oranges my scenario was poor work on a car, it failed and had to be taken to a nearby garage where it failed. The company over the phone agreed they would reimburse me. When I came with the invoice they denied all knowledge and claimed theyÔÇÖd only repair in such a situation if the car was brought towed to them.

Not the same, but IÔÇÖd get it in *writing* so you donÔÇÖt pay for your vets bill only for the cattery to suddenly develop amnesia and you be left with no recourse other than small claims court. Having it in writing protects you and them on what is agreed and should they then refuse you should have an easier job proving it

And whilst I do not want to know the cattery, I certainly do demand you pay the cat tax!! Pictures of the furry girl

    Edit:formatting/spelling

  • buildingblondie

NAL but I want to say that although it will be awful, make sure you have photos all through your cat’s recovery, for proof of anything should (heaven forbid) anything else happen.

To you and your person, I hope she heals quickly. Dressing gown cuddles are the best. Please make sure you talk to someone about what’s been going on. You’ve both experienced trauma, which should never have occurred.
