What’s the rate on the current loan?

Can she not just open a credit card?

  • Fishy_Sezer

If you can get a better rate, then it might be worth it.

The better option would be to get her a secured credit card and allow her to develop good habits.

  • bobd607

As to what others said, make her authorized user on all of your credit cards (if it’s free!) and have her get her own credit card. My first card was a Discover card if that helps.

I was a new immigrant too, and was able to show my income and use my wife’s long and extensive credit history to get a mortgage. The mortgage agent just said “yep, he has no credit history” to my wife and that was it. And I was here much less than 5 years. Don’t sweat it!

  • hamburglerized

Do you need your wifeÔÇÖs income to qualify for a mortgage?

DonÔÇÖt know why IÔÇÖm being downvoted, if she isnÔÇÖt a co-applicant on the mortgage then you donÔÇÖt need to worry about her credit score.

  • jester29

What is your current interest rate? What rate would you get in the refi?

Why not just make her an authorized user on your credit cards and/or encourage her to open a card of her own?

  • themoneydad

How long have you been married? This is a serious question.

  • NiceAsset

If your rate is good enough just donÔÇÖt use your wife as part of the mortgage application ; she can on the back end help you pay (and she will also still be part of the deed)

  • DisastrousThoughts

Refinance with a credit union, get that rate down

  • Full_Prune7491

My brother in law added his wife to the their mortgage to help build her credit. During the divorce she clean him out. He had to borrow money to pay her off.

There are way easier ways to build her credit. WhatÔÇÖs the hurry? Does she need more debt? ThatÔÇÖs what credit is for.

  • Rave_NY

There are credit cards you can put down like 200 dollars to get with no credit, it will build the credit then when you cancel you get the 200 back

  • torne_lignum

Being an authorized user counts. The activity will show up on her credit report.

  • bamagraycpa

Many credit unions have secured credit cards. It would be a good day for her to build credit in her name.

  • SafetyCompetitive421

As a spouse not on the mortgage. It didn’t impact our situation too much. I have a Zero score and banks love to way over approve people for loans. As long as you are shopping within the right budget for a house, you’ll clear by yourself. And a good mortgage lender will read between the lines and give you a little grace. We were pre approved at 260 bought a house at 275. So gave us 4% more than actually approved for knowing my income was there too just couldn’t necessarily be used.

  • HolyHand_Grenade

Just add her as an authorized user to your CC, she doesn’t even need to use it. Loan interest rates are the highest in years, I wouldn’t consider refinancing unless you have some crazy high APR and you think you can get it down.

  • haveutried2hardboot

No. You’ll likely increase your rate dramatically just to give her a boost. It’s too costly.

Add her as an AU on a couple of CLs and she should open an unsecured CC or a high limit secured CC and properly manage it for a couple of years.

  • oldmasterluke

Hey, you can open a prepaid credit card in her name. You can start off with something low like 300 bucks. You use it, refill it. After a year or two, they will offer credit. ThatÔÇÖs how I started exactly 5 years ago. My credit score is now over 800. I now have multiple credit cards with limits near 10 grand each. (I donÔÇÖt carry a balance on any of them).

  • E_Man91

Add her as an authorized user onto your credit card. Her score will skyrocket.

Me and my wife were similar situation (she had no credit established) and hers jumped almost overnight by doing this.

Don’t know why they allow it, but they do. It’s the easiest quick credit hack if one spouse’s score is way > than the other (or not established).

  • limitless__

Just so you know if your wife doesn’t work her credit score is going to be irrelevant to your mortgage process because she won’t be on it. Just having her as an AU is all you need to do.

  • Bitter_Library_2652

You could and it would help her credit score but the interest may be higher on the car loan so you would have to see what rate you pay and what they are offering. Alternatively she could try to get a credit card, a cell phone on credit, a small loan under 1000 is usually approved. There are other ways to get a credit score that are cheeper then refinancing a car.

  • bigbura

    >my wife having no credit when we plan on buying a house in 5 or so years.

Will her income be needed to finance the house purchase? If not, her credit score isn’t as important as yours. When we bought this place the bank didn’t give the wife’s score or income a 2nd look since I was flying solo on the loan. (US-based story)

  • rotrap

No. There are better ways to build credit. Add her as sn authorized user and have her get a credit card or store card as a start.

  • Mission_Asparagus12

My husband had a super thin credit profile when we got married. I added him as an authorized user to 3 cards and his credit score jumped over 100 points. We bought a house as prime borrowers less than a year after getting married

  • RedditVince

I wonder if it makes any difference making her the co-signer or to her getting a loan with you as the co-signer?

Instinctively I would think her getting a loan with you as co-signer would be better for her credit and not hurt yours. but really I don’t know for sure either.

  • chrisdiaz73

Rates are stupid  I got a 10% with a 750 score. And thats Capital One. This is coming from a 3.3 that I was paying from a car I had to get rid of. (Went used and small payment currently). But if the extra percentage is worth it then go for it. Its your wife, so youre connected financially whether you like it or not, so the more you can help each other, the higher credit power you would have!

  • xiphoidthorax

Let her get her own credit card or micro loan.
Sometimes just being on a phone plan will work.

  • gregra193

No. Just add her as authorized user to a couple (older) credit cards you have, preferably with a low balance.
