The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) has recently launched a bug bounty program designed to enhance Bitcoin and the Lightning Network. With the aim of supporting the development of these digital technologies, the HRF has issued 10 bounties, each valued at 2 BTC (approximately $58,500 at current rates), as announced officially.

The organization welcomes individuals or teams who can successfully solve any of the ten challenges to claim the 2 BTC bounty. Additionally, the HRF mentions the possibility of adding more bounties in the future.

One of the key challenges included in the bug bounty program focuses on improving the user interface (UI) for Bitcoin projects. Currently, these projects heavily rely on a proprietary design software called Figma. To promote more streamlined and user-friendly experiences, the HRF aims to provide developers with free access to a Bitcoin UI guide.

Another challenge aims to benefit the growth and reinforcement of Nostr, an open-source and censorship-resistant social network supported by Jack Dorsey. This particular challenge has gained significant attention, especially among the technically inclined cryptocurrency community.

In addition, the HRF offers bounties to enhance Bitcoin wallets, with one specific challenge aiming to facilitate the generation and memorization of seed phrases when crossing borders. This capability is often utilized by users seeking to prioritize their privacy and security. By aligning with this practice globally, the HRF contributes to the promotion of financial freedom for dissidents and human rights activists.

The 20 BTC funding for these bounties originates from the HRF’s Bitcoin Development Fund, an organizational branch committed to expanding financial freedom.

The Human Rights Foundation has set a deadline for submissions until December 31, 2024. All submissions will be shared with external industry experts for verification. The HRF assures that any unclaimed bounties will be reallocated to the Bitcoin Development Fund, reinforcing their commitment to furthering financial freedom.

This is not the HRF’s first endeavor into Bitcoin bounty programs. In December 2021, the organization collaborated with the Lightning Network payments platform Strike for a similar initiative. This past contest consisted of three challenges, each valued at 3 BTC, and lasted until December 31, 2022.

By offering these bug bounties, the HRF aims to incentivize developers to contribute towards enhancing Bitcoin’s usability, privacy, and security. The team’s recent announcement emphasizes their support for open-source developers working on improving Bitcoin, the Lightning Network, E-cash, and Nostr, based on their research regarding the digital tools demanded by activists globally.
