A Tragic Incident in Rocky Mountain National Park
A 26-year-old woman from Boulder, Colorado, lost her life in a fatal fall while free-solo climbing a ridge in Rocky Mountain National Park. The incident took place on Sunday and the park authorities confirmed the news. The woman tragically fell approximately 500 feet during the climb.
The accident was reported by the woman’s 27-year-old climbing partner, who contacted the park rangers after witnessing the mishap. The incident occurred on Blitzen Ridge of Ypsilon Mountain. These details were shared by the National Park Service in a release on Monday.
Free-soloing, the technique used by the climbers, is considered to be extremely dangerous as it involves ascending without any ropes, assistance, or safety equipment. This leaves the climbers vulnerable in the event of a fall.
The climbing partner, fortunately unharmed, was reached and rescued by the search and rescue team. Due to his location, it was necessary to seek assistance from the Colorado Air National Guard. A helicopter from Buckley Air Force Base was deployed to safely evacuate the man.

On Monday, a search and rescue team journeyed to the area above Ypsilon Lake to prepare for the helicopter recovery of the woman’s body. The body was then transported to another area of the park before being transferred to a medical examiner’s office. The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.
Sadly, this is the second reported death in Rocky Mountain National Park in the past month. Another individual, a 25-year-old man, lost his life after falling and being submerged underwater at West Creek Falls.
