Cathay Cargo has just unveiled a new service that will transport perishable goods in a faster and more efficient way. This matters because it could mean fresher food options at your local grocery store and lower costs for those products.
Strengthening Hong Kong’s Role in Global Trade
Cathay Cargo has launched a fully integrated intermodal perishables network that connects air, land, and sea. This new system reinforces Hong Kong’s position as a crucial cargo gateway for the Greater Bay Area (GBA). The network includes a refrigerated barge service that links Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) with Cathay Cargo Terminal in Dongguan. It also features an extended Air-Land Fresh Lane that spans the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, reaching Macao. In addition, the airline has expanded its existing air-to-air service to Guangzhou.
This expansion is designed to enhance routing options for shippers, ensuring better cold-chain reliability while improving access to the rapidly growing market for perishables in the GBA. With these new services, businesses can more effectively transport fresh produce, dairy, and other temperature-sensitive goods.
Innovative Refrigerated Shipping Options
The refrigerated barge service is particularly noteworthy as it is the first commercial air-sea transport solution for refrigerated perishables originating from Hong Kong. Throughout the journey, shipments remain pallet-intact to reduce handling risks. Additionally, this service features flexible departure times, making it a cost-effective choice for goods that don’t have pressing delivery deadlines.
Meanwhile, the enhanced Air-Land Fresh Lane enables perishables to reach Macao within as little as four hours from HKIA, including the necessary customs and quarantine checks. These services include pre-cleared shipments and 24/7 transfer operations, all while maintaining strict cold-chain integrity through refrigerated trucking.
Options for Different Needs
With three different service offerings now operational, businesses can choose according to their specific needs. The air-to-air transport option provides up to three daily passenger flight connections to Guangzhou, catering to customers with time-sensitive shipments. The air-land service allows for refrigerated trucking into Zhuhai and Macao. Finally, the new air-sea option serves as a more budget-friendly solution for shipments that aren’t as urgent.
Cathay Cargo has mentioned that eligible Air-Land Fresh Lane shipments may qualify for promotional trucking rates through the Airport Authority Hong Kong’s Cross-boundary Trucking Subsidy Scheme, which runs until December 31, 2026. These program enhancements aim to boost trade in perishable goods throughout the region.
