New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has alerted residents to brace themselves for an intense winter weather event, which is anticipated to bring heavy snowfall and plummeting temperatures. The city is warned to prepare for potentially its most significant snowstorm in the last five years.

During a recent news conference held at the Spring Street Salt Shed in Manhattan, the mayor declared that the city is currently under a state of emergency. Weather forecasts predict an accumulation of 8 to 12 inches of snow beginning early Sunday morning.

“Every agency is working in close coordination with one another. We are fully equipped and prepared for any winter conditions that might arise this Sunday. We are taking all necessary precautions and are ready to address every possible snow scenario,” Mayor Mamdani stated emphatically.

Following the conference, he took to social media to present the city’s comprehensive snow response strategy, ensuring that residents are informed of the ongoing developments.

Heavy Snowfall Expected on Sunday Morning

Mayor Mamdani indicated that residents should anticipate a base of around 2 inches of snow by midday Sunday, at which point the Department of Sanitation plans to deploy its extensive fleet of snowplows. He urges the public to remain indoors and take necessary safety precautions.

“The heaviest snowfall is expected between late morning and early afternoon. Visibility will significantly decrease, and wind gusts could reach up to 35 mph. New Yorkers should brace for whiteout conditions akin to near-blizzard status,” Mamdani elaborated. He emphasized that a hazardous travel advisory would remain in effect throughout Sunday and Monday, strongly advising residents to avoid driving or traveling to ensure the safety of themselves and their families.

City Agencies Mobilizing Resources

As weather conditions worsen, Mayor Mamdani informed that various city agencies, including NYCHA, Parks, and Public Schools, have been actively staffing up and mobilizing resources for days in anticipation of adverse weather events.

“We have scrutinized 311 call reports from previous snow events to identify areas where city services fell short, such as locations with insufficient salt application or those overlooked in past storm responses. We aim to resolve these issues proactively before the imminent storm strikes,” Mamdani asserted.

In a show of support, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has activated the National Guard to assist in the city’s snowstorm response following her declaration of a state of emergency. Hochul affirmed that she is in constant communication with Mayor Mamdani as they manage the unfolding situation.

Code Blue Currently in Effect

Mamdani also cautioned that this storm will usher in a prolonged spell of extremely cold temperatures that could persist for a week. He remarked, “It is anticipated to be colder than any sustained duration we have seen in about eight years.”

A Code Blue alert has been in place since Thursday and will be sustained throughout the ongoing cold weather, according to the mayor. 

“Outreach workers from Homeless Services will be present across all five boroughs, ensuring that homeless individuals have access to shelter; no one will be turned away. All hospitals, Department of Homeless Services drop-in centers, and shelters are open and welcoming. If you or someone you know requires help finding warmth, please call 311,” he urged.

Will NYC Experience a Snow Day?

The mayor previously announced that there will be no snow day for public school students on Monday. A decision regarding whether classes will be conducted in-person or remotely will be made by noon on Sunday.

“Our dedicated teachers and school staff are ensuring that students have the necessary devices for remote learning if that option is implemented on Monday. They have also conducted additional testing to guarantee that virtual learning can proceed smoothly if needed,” added Mamdani.

Closures and Cancellations Across the City

In light of the State of Emergency declared by the governor on Friday, early voting for the February 3 special elections in New York City will be paused on Sunday and Monday. State officials are collaborating with the city’s Board of Elections to extend hours to allow for the remainder of the early voting period.

Moreover, several city attractions and events have been canceled or postponed ahead of the impending storm.

The Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, and New York Aquarium will remain closed on Sunday, alongside the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens.

The New York Rangers have announced the cancellation of their Alumni Classic, scheduled for noon at Madison Square Garden, and refunds will be issued through the original payment method.
