A Significant Year for View Newspaper Group
The past year has been transformative for the team at View Newspaper Group, marked by several milestones. Among these, the most significant achievement was the launch of our 22nd publication, the St. Clair Area View, in May. This launch has solidified our position as Michigan’s largest independently-owned newspaper group—a testament to our commitment to local journalism.
Celebrating Growth and Local Engagement
Since our establishment in 2003 by Lapeer native Rick Burrough, View Newspaper Group has experienced continuous growth through both acquisitions and the initiation of new publications. This expansion reinforces our belief that community-based, locally-owned newspapers are essential to the neighborhoods they serve. Our newspapers play a crucial role in delivering local news, entertainment, and sports coverage, while also providing local businesses and organizations with an invaluable platform to reach their customer base.
The launch of the St. Clair Area View was my second experience of launching a newspaper since rejoining the team over ten years ago. While each launch involves considerable effort, it serves as a reminder of our mission. Since its debut, both the community and local businesses have welcomed the newspaper with open arms. This initiative has also allowed me to do what I love best: meet and connect with new individuals. Each time we enter a new market, I seize the opportunity to engage with community leaders, learning how we can better serve their needs. These relationships are crucial for fostering growth and success as we expand statewide.
Building Connections for Future Success
The connections we cultivate throughout the year become invaluable resources, especially as I reach out to various partners to gather their New Year’s Business Resolutions. This tradition not only enriches my understanding but also provides inspiration, which I hope resonates with our readers.
Given that I facilitate this exchange, I believe it is only fair to also share my New Year’s Business Resolution—a task that is sometimes challenging after a busy year has ended.
To enhance my effectiveness, I discovered a set of tips from Forbes.com that provide guidance on crafting successful resolutions. Here’s a summary of their recommendations:
Key Tips for Effective Resolutions
-
Set Specific Goals: Ensure that your resolutions are clear and measurable for better clarity.
-
Be Realistic: Establish attainable goals to help you stay motivated and prevent disappointment.
-
Avoid Overwhelming Goals: Break down your resolutions into manageable steps with deadlines.
-
Track Progress Regularly: Periodically assess and adjust your goals to stay aligned with your objectives.
-
Celebrate Milestones: Recognize your achievements and reward your progress to maintain motivation.
With these principles in mind, combined with the accomplishments I am most proud of in 2025, I’ve decided that my New Year’s Business Resolution this year is to forge one new connection each month. I anticipate that these connections will ideally be in-person interactions that lead to rewarding collaborations. Who knows—perhaps one of my 2026 connections might share their own resolution with our readers!
Inspirational Resolutions from Community Leaders
Here are the thoughtful and motivating New Year’s Business Resolutions that several of my current connections shared this year:
Mike Burke, President, ChoiceOne Bank
"I plan to dive deeper into the evolving world of Artificial Intelligence and explore its impact on both my personal and professional life. Although AI may seem daunting, I am optimistic about its potential to shape the future. Additionally, I remain dedicated to maintaining genuine, face-to-face interactions, which I believe are irreplaceable in fostering strong relationships."
Pastor Gale Kragt, Executive Director, Spiritual Care Consultants of West Michigan
"This year, my resolution is not about the usual pursuits of physical fitness. Instead, I aim to cultivate a closer relationship with Jesus than ever before, reflecting His teachings in all that I do and say. Each day will become an opportunity to elevate my faith and love."
Pete Clinton, Advertising Director, View Newspaper Group
"We must persist in our storytelling efforts, illustrating how our newspaper group continues to flourish and how our advertising partners are benefitting from marketing in our community newspapers. With 22 publications delivering to over 350,000 households weekly, our story is compelling. We need to communicate that we are distinct from corporate-backed newspaper groups, emphasizing our vital role in every community we serve as a local, independent newspaper organization."
Jen Ward, Graphics Manager, View Newspaper Group
"I have a couple of resolutions for 2026. First, I want to stay actively engaged within the community. Networking and volunteering are essential to my journey of personal growth, as they help me build authentic connections. Participating in networking events and business luncheons allows for knowledge exchange and adds value to each other’s endeavors. Additionally, I aspire to implement a rotating buddy system within the graphics department, enabling our designers to experience each other’s tasks and ultimately learn from one another. This cross-training effort will further strengthen the bonds we share as a team."
