Reflecting on Recent Celebrations

By Ronni Newton

I trust that all those who celebrate had a joyful Easter this past Sunday, as well as a meaningful Passover this past week. These festive times are a wonderful opportunity for communities to come together, share traditions, and create cherished memories.

Last week, I mentioned the unpredictable nature of spring weather, and it seemed to take a turn over the weekend, as Saturday brought unexpectedly warm temperatures in the afternoon. While many enjoyed the summery vibe, I must admit I welcomed the warmth!

A Glimpse of Millie

The photo below captures my dog, Millie, who lay sprawled on the floor after a walk. The warm weather wasn’t her favorite, especially with her full fur coat on. Thankfully, she has her grooming appointment on Monday, where she’ll be treated to a much-needed haircut. Depending on when you read this, she may already have undergone her transformation for the season.

Culinary Adventures at Wabi Sabi

Taking advantage of the lovely weather, we decided to walk to dinner at Wabi Sabi, where we explored several dishes we had not tried before. One of the highlights was the Takoyaki—fluffy octopus balls topped with bonito flakes, kewpie mayo, eel sauce, and seaweed flakes. They were served piping hot, making the flakes above quiver due to the temperature contrast!

Of course, we couldn’t resist ordering my favorite FD potatoes, and I also indulged in the Yakiudon, a delicious stir-fried udon dish with pork belly and vegetables. Ted opted for the Salmon/Spicy Tuna Don, which combined spicy tuna, salmon, avocado, tobiko, furikake, and nori.

Ongoing Community Engagements

With it being April vacation week, there weren’t as many meetings on the calendar. However, last Monday evening, Ted and I had the pleasure of attending the Cronkite Award Dinner at the Mark Twain House. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa received the award from the Connecticut Foundation for Open Government (CFOG), a group I am proud to be a board member of. This event also celebrated the remarkable 50th anniversary of Connecticut’s Freedom of Information Act.

On Thursday, I attended the West Hartford Chamber of Commerce’s After Hours at PeoplesBank, co-hosted by Celebrate! West Hartford. Being on the Celebrate! committee for over a decade means I’m excited about upcoming articles regarding this year’s festival set for June 7 and 8.

A Discussion on Headline Integrity

This week’s soapbox reflection centers around the art of crafting headlines. I learned from a skilled former copyeditor who was recognized for her headline writing. The main principles include keeping word count minimal, avoiding revealing too much of the story (thus encouraging readers to engage with the full article), and steering clear of sensational clickbait.

Recently, headlines about a bear spotted in West Hartford created quite a stir. Articles with titles like "Large Bear Sprints Through Mall Parking Lot, Sending Shoppers Fleeing in Shock" resulted in a mix of amusement and disbelief. Other national news outlets chronicled the bear’s antics, adding to the overall frenzy.

Addressing the Recent Garage Fire

Media responses to the garage fire on Taylor Road illustrated various approaches. Each outlet utilized the same fire department press release but opted for different angles. I chose a straightforward approach, highlighting the firefighters’ efforts in my headline as "West Hartford Firefighters Extinguish Garage Fire Saturday," whereas other organizations highlighted minor homeowner injuries reported and presented more theatrical language.

Here’s This Week’s Buzz!

Exciting Developments at 1123-1125 New Britain Avenue

  • There’s a lot happening at 1123-1125 New Britain Avenue, and I will break it down for clarity:

    • Sugar Gen: Owner Manira Truong aims for a May 1 opening, bringing her all-natural sugaring services to a larger storefront that enhances visibility, previously located at Juniper Homecare.

    • Cake Gypsy: After four years of anticipation, owner Deanna Damen has abandoned her plans for the New Britain Avenue site due to staffing struggles and parking issues. Instead, Damen will soon transform another West Hartford location into Cupcake Express for online order pickups and delivery.

    • The space intended for Cake Gypsy will now transition into an establishment for Beloved Companions and Pawz at Peace, providing compassionate pet services.

Other noted openings around West Hartford include:

  • The Friendly Toast will open its doors at 36 LaSalle Road on May 5, marking its expansive growth into Connecticut.
